2 killed, 1 injured in shooting at small Ky. college

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Two people were shot and killed and a teenager wounded Tuesday in the parking lot of an eastern Kentucky community college, authorities said.

CBS affiliate WYMT-TV in Hazard reports authorities are saying the deadly shooting was likely a domestic situation that "just wound up in the parking lot of the community college."

A police dispatcher told The Associated Press the shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. at Hazard Community & Technical College in Hazard, Ky. The dispatcher, who was not authorized to release information, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Two people showed up at the Kentucky State Police post in Hazard and said they were involved in the shooting, police spokesman Tony Watts said, but he said he did not know whether they were alleged perpetrators or witnesses. State police held the two until Hazard police came and took them into custody, he said.

Conor Duff, the college's evening coordinator, said the school was on lockdown following the shooting at the campus, 90 miles southeast of Lexington. Police searched the school's two buildings and determined that no one else was at risk, Duff said.

Classes had resumed Monday at the campus after the holiday break, according to the college's website, which also posted that there had been an incident and asked students to stay away from the main campus.

The college's academic programs range from associate's degrees in arts and sciences to career-focused training in mining technology and heavy-equipment operation.

Of course this story could be just another made up stories the right wing haters think are part of a growing anti-gun Federal conspiracy. Read about he grandfather from Sandy Hook who is getting hate mail from loony right wing groups. They really believe that the events a Sandy Hook were not real.

The comment is coarse, I grant you, but not without merit. The point is that at this very moment, the President is announcing requirements to do background checks whenevery you buy a gun, banning "assault" weapons, and banning clips with high capacity.

And while he's doing that, this killing would not have been prevented in the least by any of his measures. Neither would the one at the Sandy Hook school, which was the impetus for this recent spate of gun banning. That kid would have simply gone to school with other guns if he couldn't get the "assault" rifle. Fewer rounds, you say? Okay. He can carry two guns. He can reload. Please. We're playing a shell game by arguing over what type of gun we'll let people buy. He could also just make a small bomb. You can watch YouTube and they'll show you how. The guy at the Denver theatre had no problem making a whole series of explosives to booby trap his apartment. The people in the theater were lucky he didn't decide to just bring a bomb. He could have killed hundreds in an instant.

People will buy guns, get their background checks, have their limited clips. Meanwhile, crazies will steal those guns, or buy their guns illegally, or just forget guns and start using whatever else is handy.

Go ahead. Call EROTEME2 "stupid". But the killing is going to continue, regardless of these ridiculous gun bans. The President is not doing anything to solve this problem. He said at the outset that no law would be perfect, but that is not an excuse for inaction. True. And his new laws are inaction at its finest, a political move that protects none of us.

Why is the term "domestic dispute" always used by the press in a manner that implies it was not as tragic as other disputes that also end in murder

"Domestic dispute" is the most volatile situation law enforcement can respond to. At least in a "robbery in progress" or "burglary in progress" the officers responding know who the bad guy is. In a domestic dispute the 'bad guy' could be anyone - or no one. Love and hate are the two most powerful emotions a human can experience. And love can turn to hate in a flash. When it does, any and everyone concerned is in danger - including any officer unfortunate enough to be dispatched to the scene.
