ELMONT, N.Y. Students at Elmont Memorial High School are resuming normal activities after reports of a suspicious person put the school in lockdown, CBS Station WCBS reports.
The lockdown was put into effect shortly after 8 a.m., in response to a 911 call from a woman who said she saw a male teenager with a backpack and a lime green gun. Police said the gun was likely a toy, but took precaution in light of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, Conn., last month.
No injuries have been reported.
Nassau County Police were guarding the entrance of school for more than three hours. SWAT teams were also seen in front of the school building.
Radio Station WINS reports students were kept in classrooms with locked doors and the lights turned out. Some students were turned away because they were arriving at school as the lockdown was beginning, but worried parents began congregating around the school because their kids are still inside.
WINS correspondent Glenn Schuck reports police helicopters also searched the surrounding area by air.
Parents received "robo-calls" notifying them of the situation.
One parent who showed up at the school told Schuck she has been in touch with her child, who told her the students are huddled in corners of their rooms with the lights out before things returned to normal.

In their defense, if they did nothing and something happened, the press would eat them alive.
So tell me, since there will always be criminals who will eventually get their hands on a gun why do we even bother to have any laws on gun ownership? Why do we even bother with background checks? I mean that's a waste of time cause some other gun show seller won't bother so why should the rest of the sellers bother? Why do we care about background checks? Why not just have a free for all? Let's open the availabilities for gun sales to all.
And why we are at it...why do we have DWI enforcement? We all know someone who has driven drunk. Who cares? Why have bar owners responsible for their customers being wasted? There will always be drunk drivers. Why do we care about car insurance or restrictions on driving ages...there are always some underage kid going on a joy ride somewhere.
What an incredibly lazy wasteful attitude. Kinda fatalistic, isn't it?
No one is going to take away your guns that you need to protect your home and for hunting. What we want are things such as stronger back ground checks and tougher regulations on gun shows.
What scares me? My brother's mother in law, a elderly widow is starting to have dementia and yet there she is...at home with a collection 15 guns built over the years...
