Shell drilling ship Kulluk grounded on Alaska island

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Shell Alaska says a drifting drill ship that broke loose from tow vessels during a severe storm has run aground on the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island.

Shell's unified command center says the Kulluk grounded around 9 p.m. Monday. It says the crew of a tug boat had been ordered to separate from it earlier in the night for the safety of its crew members.

The Kulluk is one of two Shell drill ships that operated in U.S. Arctic waters in 2012. It had been under tow by a tug and a 360-foot anchor handler before it broke loose earlier Monday night.

The vessel first separated from a towing vessel Thursday night south of Kodiak Island. Repeated attempts to control it in the rough North Pacific have been unsuccessful.

All 18 crew members on the Kulluk were safely evacuated Saturday from the drill ship, which has no propulsion system of its own.

March 24, 1989 exxon valdez spill...

Around the late 90's a contract employee working for slave wages at an exxon production facility thousands of miles from Alaska spray painted a row boat (ss exxon valdez)

The said row boat was used to access/replace steal nozzles (used for evaporation) on plastic piping in toxic waste ponds..
exxon couldn't afford any new paddles...original paddles stolen by exxon employees...so life jackets were donned and "crew" would paddle out in high winds & toxic waste using spade shovels..
The ponds of poison actually had posts with life preserver rings hanging from them...as if anyone would live long enough to be "saved" if they took a dip...
Location of ponds down wind of the plant...means besides the h2s coming out of the ponds...if plant went into upset the sh*ts coming your way...

Many safety "concerns" were raised because of this beyond dangerous stupidity to the powers that be...
The only thing they gave a damn about was who spray painted the boat and why so many spade shovels were mia....
There was outrage among top way overpaid "bosses" and demands to fire the row boat painter..

Dumb is dumb...and most of the dumbest run the show in bigoil...

Waste of US Tax Dollars to send Coast Guard. Let Shell sink, swim or be grounded on their own dime.

Guardians would act first and worry about that later.

Just wait until one of these deep drill oil wells spills in the future during winter months. It will make the Gulf spill look miniscule in its destruction to marine and wildlife.

People should be asking what the white sheen in the Gulf of Mexico around the BP disaster is. The lab results should have been in and reported.

I am wondering the same thing. My bet is on fracking fluid. Could also be dispersant.
