8-year-old says teacher saved him in Conn. shooting

An eight-year-old student described how a teacher saved him from bullets at his Newtown, Conn., elementary school Friday morning, where at least 27 people were killed by a gunman.

The student told WCBS-TV's Lou Young he was on the way to the school's office when he saw bullets.

"I saw some of the bullets going down the hall that I was right next to and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom," the student said.

"It sounded like someone was kicking a door," he said of the bullets.

At around 9:40 a.m., a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary school. At least 18 of the deaths are children and an unknown number are injured.

CBS News correspondent John Miller reports that preliminary information indicates the gunman, who was dead on the scene, was a father to one of the students and is in his 20s.

Students were taken to a nearby firehouse and are being reunited with their parents. Residents expressed shock over the violence in what they consider a quiet and safe town.

"It was horrendous," parent Brenda Lebinski told Reuters. She rushed to the school, where her daughter is in the third grade, as soon as she heard the news.

"Everyone was in hysterics -- parents, students," she said. "There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied."

When the suspect is a muslim/middle eastern, they call him a "terrorist" and everyone starts going ape **** on every brown person they see. When the suspect is black, they call him a "gangster", "thug", and everyone starts discriminating against the blacks. BUT when the suspect is white, he has a "mental illness" .... typical americans..

I guess gun laws banning guns on school property are supposed to keep gang members at bay in urban schools, but, really, since it's not feasible to disarm the entire country, shouldn't we allow somebody to carry on school property?

There's one raving lunatic on this board who sounds like he should be locked up. He's anti-gun, but he's so far off the charts in terms of sanity he could probably rationalize using one to make his point.

OK Bob_Reed. One Step further - Why and how were these weapons, provided by mom, made available to a mentally deranged son?? That's all I'm saying the guns should not have been there in the first place. Or at the very least if she had such a passion for firearms they should have been kept perhaps in a secure locker at the shooting range??

I don't own any guns, but I have no problem with folks who do and who use them in accordance with the laws. I think if we changed our laws to make it mandatory to get a life sentence for ANY crime committed with a firearm, we would go a long way to reducing gun-related crimes. But I don't think any law is going to be able to do away with these shooting spree killers. They are rare and the prevalence of guns enables them to get whatever they need to commit their heinous acts. Sad to say, but we're just going to have to accept that these crimes will occasionally occur.

Unfortunately the blood of this heinous act is on the deceased mother. There are several devices available to lock down fire arms and keep out of the hands of an irresponsible mentally challenged son. I own several firearms and safety always comes first. I would like to know how he was able to get to the guns in the first place.Trigger locks? Fire/Theft proof gun cabinet? Where was the ammo purchased? How does this freak even have a drivers license? I apologize if this seems unsympathetic but I have a couple of youngsters and am just looking for answers a like everyone else. People please LOCK YOUR WEAPONS!!!!!!

Perhaps legislation that made it mandatory that all teachers be licensed and trained to carry a concealed weapon, this would be the last line of defense for the children. Such a plan would be very inexpensive and very effective as our children's last line of defense just in case a killer got through the outer security measures. If acted on now this plan could be fully functional in 6 months and our children will be safe.

The side effect of this plan would be that every teacher would be subjected to an extensive background check by the FBI which would weed out any teachers with troubling back grounds which would also improve our children's safety.

The tough lesson here is that you cannot prevent tragedy like this, but you can cause a lot of pain in trying to.

Hello
This is about the Children and their families now.
I ti not about Obama, bodygurads. It is also how a teacher was killed in her own home, he had this planned.

He took many young lives, some adults of the school.

At this time I think it should be focused on the families and children and how they will not have that little child to Greet in the morning, to tuck in to bed at night or kiss good night. A hug, a teddy bear, a warm fuzzy blanket.

We can talk about guns & gun control after all is said & done.

I hope there is Positive talk, I know how many families are angry.

May all of you think about the families & especially the Young Children & teachers who helped them.

Peace to All
