K.C. Chiefs' Jovan Belcher kills girlfriend, self

Last Updated 4:17 p.m. ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.

Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though police said that Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had been arguing recently. The two of them have a 3-month-old child.

Belcher thanked general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel before shooting himself in the parking lot of the team's practice facility, police spokesman Darin Snapp said. Police had locked it down by mid-morning and reporters were confined to the street just outside the gates.

The Chiefs were scheduled to play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The Panthers were advised by the league to travel to Kansas City as planned, though no official announcement on the game itself had been made.

Belcher was a 25-year-old native of West Babylon, N.Y., on Long Island, who played college ball at Maine. He signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, made the team and stayed with it for four years, moving into the starting lineup. He'd played in all 11 games this season.

"The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement.

"We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted," Hunt said. "We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."

The NFL released a statement that also expressed sympathy and said, "we have connected the Chiefs with our national team of professional counselors to support both the team and the families of those affected. We will continue to provide assistance in any way that we can."

Authorities reported receiving a call Saturday morning from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles away from the Arrowhead complex. The call actually came from Belcher's mother, who referred to the victim as her daughter, leading to some initial confusion, police said.

"She treated Kasandra like a daughter," Snapp explained. Belcher's mother, who is from New York, had recently moved in with the couple, "probably to help out with the baby," Snapp said.

A fatal shooting at a home on 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, was followed by another deadly shooting at a Kansas City Chiefs training facility. Police said the two were related.

Police then received a phone call from the Chiefs' training facility.

"The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with," Snapp said. The player was "holding a gun to his head" as he stood in front of the front doors of the practice facility.

"And there were Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him. It appeared they were talking to the suspect," Snapp said. "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger, Snapp said.

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him," he said. "They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

So sad for everyone involved.. No one wins in a situation like this everyone loses.. I can only imagine what or whom prompted this young man to take his girlfriend and then his own life.. What it was that could not be worked out and what would be so devastating that one feel they would have to kill without having any (that I know of) history of violence.. I could only imagine what the Devil and his evil angels were telling him to get him to shoot his girlfriend not once but nine times and what they were whispering to him the whole time before he finally turned the gun on himself.. The Devil is busy.. Wake up & open your eyes.. He is real & we all know him as that negative( alter ego) or whatever people would say to justify his existence in them.. He is in the music that we listen to & chant as if we are worshipping him.. THIS BATTLE IS REAL..

I am sorry for the family's loss. This suicide/murder effects many people. I think Joe Linta who commented on the Soledad O'Brien show today was sad. I think his team who knew him for what 5 years had to know that this man was suffering and it is pathetic that it was covered up by everyone because of money and power.

Just like Penn State scam, this team needs to be investigated for cover up issues before it continues on the field. Professional sports is not the military, and it is total bull **** that these coverups continue to go on in private corporations as well as pro sports. Each team member is responsible for keep their own straight and narrow, and honest and if they get out of sync it should effect the entire Professional Institution. The entire company and all it's connections.

This man was crying out and as a result of this no one reached out because of the money lost for the team.. Shame on you all..

Cover up issues? they helped him with therapy for him and his girlfriend and he told them it didnt work and then put a bullet in his head, should they follow him around everywhere he goes? Does your work follow you around or anyone else who has problems? Scam like Penn St, ur a joke!!!! No one knew that Jr Seau was going to kill himself but he did. People are embarrassed when they have problem and r afraid to ask for help. When someone says they r doing better do you send a spy to their house because you think they are lying? No, you take them for their word. Jovan is the one at fault, he had poor judgement, very poor judgement. Do not blame the Chiefs, Everybody always wants to point fingers at everyone else......ur a *******........P.S was the Chiefs suppose to put his problems on ESPN for everyone to know...

How nice that the coach was extremely concerned that the fans not be disappointed. Yes, a football game is the most important right now- that and praising a murderer for being a great guy. Sickening.

In his public comments, the mayor seemed to be making excuses for Belcher. The focus of all the media should be on just how common the murder of women by their boyfriends and husbands is in this country. It is epidemic. If the woman defends herself, she spends life in prison. And it's a national disgrace that the GOP continues to hold up the Violence Against Women Act.
