NEW YORK New York City's mayor says the dangling boom of a midtown Manhattan crane damaged in the storm is tethered to the luxury high-rise building.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Saturday that officials hope to open 57th Street on Saturday night.

The crane boom collapsed during Superstorm Sandy this week, likely because of heavy winds.

Engineers climbed the 74-story building in the midst of the storm to inspect the crane.

Some neighboring buildings were evacuated, including a hotel with 900 guests.

I saw a news report on the crane after the storm and the Newswoman asked the guy she was talking to "why didn't the company take the crane down? as they had warnings for a week" Really I wanted to slap her you don't just "take it down" it takes more than a week to do this. and what scares me is she is getting paid for this ........*palm to forehead*

Glad they got it tethered. Was worried about the danger of it falling. At one point it looked like the only thing holding the boom on was the cables. Also saw on the night of the Hurricane that they were talking about trying to do this at that time.

Bloomberg's first concern was not the safety of people, or sending resources to help others, but making sure that his buddies that run the NYC Marathon will make more money. He doesn't have a clue about average Americans that produce real services and products for America, as compared to his financier crony thieves who produce only mega dollars for their own.
