Homeless man saves baby born at truck stop

OKLAHOMA CITY Two unexpected moments happened at an Oklahoma City truck stop Thursday that turned a frantic situation into a happy ending.

Pregnant Keaton Mason was driving with her fianc?e to the hospital when the baby decided it was time to enter the world, CBS affiliate KWTV Oklahoma City reported.

However, it became a matter of life and death when the girl, born in the passenger seat of the couple's Honda after it pulled into a truck stop, had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

"The lady was screaming, 'My baby, my baby's blue ... she's not breathing,'" recalled Jennifer Morris.

The girl's panicked parents called 911. But a homeless man named Gary Wilson stepped in to help. He saved the baby's life by freeing her neck, tying the umbilical cord, and rubbing her back. Even during the 911 call with the dispatcher, Wilson showed calm.

"He did everything perfectly right," Sandra Lesperance, a paramedic said.

Waneva Morris, a worker at the truck stop, said Wilson looked liked Jesus. "He had the long hair, the long beard. [He was] a very nice gentleman."

Mason's baby, Tatum Brown, was born at 4 pounds, 11 ounces; doctors say she is doing fine. As for Wilson, KWTV reported he was already gone the following morning. Truck stop employees offered him a meal and a place to sleep.

"He was our angel that night, that's for sure," said Mason.

Stop switching the focus and being so self-righteous about breast feeding. Babies need love and nourishment, and bottle feeding from a loving mother provides both, even if breast milk is what nature intended. Not all women can or want to breast feed, but they give their children what they "need" all the same. Comments like yours are just pure arrogance and judgement.

Obviously the homeless man has a decent background. Good judgement, not afraid to take charge, get the job done, and then get out. Not looking for praise, just doing the right thing. Hope the good he did comes around for him.

Indeed. Excellent observation that seems to have eluded many. We all deserve more than a meal and a place to sleep but that would be an excellent start for thousands who have been shut out of our culture (for various reasons of economics, health, circumstance).

I admire anyone who is assertive in an emergency, too. A fine trait. I hope he is able to maintain his privacy, though. Heaven help him if anyone finds out but if they do I have a request for the media to not ruin his life with preconceived notions about anything.

and why is that? Sometimes people get pregnant and decide that one unintended pregnancy should not necessarily dictate a marriage without love. Your post is judgmental. Many blessings on this family and on Mr. Wilson.

The story says she "was driving with her fiance", it doesn't say boyfriend, so they do intend to marry & not just live together - although there's really nothing wrong with that. Not every couple HAS to be married to provide for & love their children.
