Dog rescues brother trapped in Cape Cod woods

SANDWICH, Mass. A golden retriever who was trapped with his brother for two weeks in the woods on Cape Cod managed to find his way back home and lead his owner back to his sibling, CBS Boston reported.

Baxter and Bailey were tied together with a double leash in front of their owner's Sandwich, Mass., home when they got loose on Sept. 26.

Owner Penny Blackwell put up flyers and appealed for help on Facebook, but after two weeks passed with no sign of the dogs, she began to lose faith that she would find them.

"I had pretty much given up hope that they were going to come home," Blackwell said.

Then, when Blackwell was out of town on business, she received a text message from a friend saying one of the dogs had been found. A family who had seen Blackwell's Facebook posts spotted Baxter wandering near their home.

And when Blackwell took Baxter back to where he'd been found, the golden retriever seemed to be on a mission to save his sibling.

"Baxter kind of led me off the side through the woods. I had twigs in my eyes and leaves in my hair," Blackwell said.

The dog led his owner right to Bailey, whose leash had become ensnared in bushes.

"I could hardly get him untied because he was jumping on me and jumping on Baxter because he was so happy to see us," Blackwell said.

The dogs each lost 8 to 10 pounds while they were missing but are otherwise in good health. And their owner is grateful to have them back.

"Baxter's a hero for taking me there," Blackwell said.

To SWIFT29 and NEWSTER90210, I generally don't read or post comments on websites, but I was interested in reading this article because I love dogs. However, I DON'T love politics. If you guys want to bash people or debate political policy, why don't you go do it on some other site? I hate to say it, because some comments are really interesting or informative, but you have provided concrete evidence for why I don't bother with this stuff.

Two things 1) Hope she learned her lesson with those ridiculous leashes.
2) What kind of good dog owner puts that cheap dry garbage in their dog bowls?
Would she want to eat the same freeze dried garbage day in and day out?

Tied together with a double leash and left unattended?? People do really stupid things. These dogs could be dead because of her stupidity.

I had neighbors who were stupid too. Their dog's collar had tons of "tags" on it. Picture a key chain with keys on it, and then added to that ring, another ring with more keys on it. He was a small dog and every time he bent his head to eat, all the tags would drop into his food. He couldn't eat properly. One day he went missing, and it was two days before he came back. I saw him running down the street with his right front paw stuck through his collar. He had twigs and leaves stuck on his fur. I would bet any money the poor thing got got up in brush because of all the crap on his collar.

Not long after, they had ME look after him because they went on a trip. I fixed that collar. I tightened it up a bit so it wasn't so loose and took everything but the dog license off it.

And I'm amazed the kids are still living, never mind the dog.

Do not tether dogs outside unattended! That said, I am not surprised a golden could do that. I have a golden, Buster, who is my service dog, and he and I are are virtually telepathic in our communication. I truly could not do without him. Go Buster, and go, golden retrievers.

Newster I must have missed yet another sad example of the loss of humanity from the extreme right. Now I can see some postulating about souls, and I would gather there are more mean ignorant atheists on the right but maybe not. Maybe all those wing nut born agains waiting for (or encouraging) the rapture make up for the the no soul folks. Either way anyone who doesn't believe in souls I KNOW A SECRET: you're in for a big surprise....
Gotta add my 2c re: "exceptionalism" - another wrap themselves in the flag, we're number 1, better than the rest hooey from the right that they use to drag anyone not in lockstep with them through the mud. Hate that crap. Indicative of their mindset. Reminds me of Nazis, which is where I think they're treading next.
