Fla. bug-eating contest winner dies afterwards

MIAMI The winner of a roach-eating contest in South Florida died shortly after downing dozens of the live bugs as well as worms, authorities said Monday.

About 30 contestants ate the insects during Friday night's contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach about 40 miles north of Miami. The grand prize was a python.

Edward Archbold, 32, became ill shortly after the contest ended and collapsed in front of the store, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office statement released Monday. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities were waiting for results of an autopsy to determine a cause of death.

"Unless the roaches were contaminated with some bacteria or other pathogens, I don't think that cockroaches would be unsafe to eat," said Michael Adams, professor of entomology at the University of California at Riverside, who added that he has never heard of someone dying after consuming roaches.

"Some people do have allergies to roaches," he said, "but there are no toxins in roaches or related insects."

None of the other contestants became ill, the sheriff's office said.

"We feel terribly awful," said store owner Ben Siegel, who added that Archbold did not appear to be sick before the contest. "He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice," Siegel said, adding that Archbold was "the life of the party."

Siegel said Archbold was selling the exotic prize to a friend who took him to the contest.

A statement from Siegel's attorney said all the participants signed waivers "accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest."

The bugs consumed were from an inventory of insects "that are safely and domestically raised in a controlled environment as food for reptiles."

Firstly, I feel very sorry for your loss. It was your last line 'my heart aches' which made me realise that sometimes it may be possible for an individual to reach out and comfort another stranger, and I felt compelled to try to help you understand some of the mean comments that you have been reading. I hope I'm not sounding patronizing to you and, having experienced loss on a hugely impacting way in my life I hope this will go someway towards helping.

The story in itself is sensational and, unfortunately, one of the negatives of mass social communication is the sense of detatchment that thereby proliferates. Some people are not able to see the recipient of the tragedy as a human being. It's just another story to be 'liked', retweeted and commented on. There is a world of difference between telling a slightly sick joke in a pub being acceptable and a genuine campaign of trolling but in news forums the lines become skewed.

I believe, and indeed hope, that every one of the individuals that read your comment felt ashamed and would never have meant to add further misery to an already tragic situation. It's a senseless need to be shocking, with the anonimity that the internet provides which has created this phenomenon.

My heart goes out to the family of this poor man, who was doing nothing more than taking part in what he considered a fun and safe event. Please don't alllow comments such as the ones you've read to inform your opinion of society. I truly believe most people are good people.

Some of you people should really think before you speak..or type. This man who has died was a loving father, son, grandson, and a nephew to a dear friend of mine. His family will never see him here on earth again and you are poking fun at him. Would you be so bold to make these comments to his little girl? Imagine if it was someone close to you, you probably wouldn't be laughing and saying they deserved it. Do you think his mother is not reading these posts?! Like it is not hard enough already. So incredible disappointed to see these posts, it makes my heart ache.

One person said that he might not have properly chewed the cockroaches. If so, they might have nibbled him to death from the inside out.
