Cops: Woman killed by border agent hit him with car

SAN DIEGO A woman who was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent last week left an apartment after authorities came to arrest someone else, and she struck the agent with the car at least twice as she fled, police said in their first detailed account of the killing.

The Tuesday account came a day after the father of 32-year-old Valeria Munique Alvarado tearfully demanded answers and mourners held a candlelight vigil in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista. It was the first time that authorities explained how the victim was linked to the agent.

Plainclothes Border Patrol agents identified themselves as law enforcement officials when they arrived at the apartment Friday to look for a felon who was previously deported from the United States, police said. The apartment had been the subject of complaints about drug activity.

Police say Alvarado struck the agent at least once with her car. The agent then told her she was under arrest for vehicular assault and another agent reached through her window to try to remove the keys. She struck the agent again and drove more than 200 yards with him on the hood.

"He was hit with the vehicle and got lodged on the windshield where you saw the impact and was carried several hundred yards before he discharged his weapon through the windshield of the vehicle," Deputy Chief Rodney Scott of the U.S. Border Patrol told CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker after the incident.

According to witnesses, the car reached speeds of about 25 mph and crossed the median.

Family members say the mother of five children, ages 3 to 17, lived in San Diego and was visiting a friend on Friday. She is a U.S. citizen whose father has been a California correctional officer for 20 years and whose brother has been in the Army reserves for 10 years and was preparing for an overseas deployment.

Chula Vista police and the Border Patrol offered scant information about the shooting before Tuesday's statement, prompting complaints from the family that they were being left in the dark.

"They have been very uncompassionate with us. We don't know anything up to this point. We don't know who leads the investigation," Valentin Tachiquin, her father, said at a news conference Monday.

Activists say witnesses have told them that the plainclothes agent was walking toward the woman's car, while the vehicle was slowly in reverse.

Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee's U.S-Mexico border program, said it was premature to jump to conclusions after the account that police offered Tuesday, noting that authorities said the investigation was in its early stages.

This story is missing a lot of information. Were words exchanged between the deceased and cops? Were there other people in the house? When did neighbors get involved? What were the extent of injuries to the officer? Why would any officer reach into a car when the person driving has intensions of harming them? They can pick her up later when she feels less threatened. She wasn't the one they wanted did they eventually get their man? Were there drugs in the house? How many officers were involved and were there female officers among them?

"Missing information" indeed. Can you imagine what would happen if a White Person hit some Non-White Persons --- twice --- with his car at around 20 m.p.h.? The Non-White Persons would rush the car with the White Driver, rip off the door, pull him out bodily, and rip him to shreds. Unless they had weapons, whereupon they'd simply fill the car, and White Driver, with bullets. (See: Crown Heights, Brooklyn). But Proud Drug-Dealing Chicanas with 9 children are supposed to get a pass, right? After all, being from Mexico, they're not resposible for how they drive and whom they "accidentally" on purpose run into to, right?

Law enforcement, just like any other profession, has a few bad apples. However, they do a necessary civic duty. No society can do without some form of law enforcement. If you are on the receiving end of a law enforcement activity it's probably because you either broke the law or associate with those who do. Unless you have worked in law enforcement or personally know someone who does, don't be too quick to criticize.

There are several law enforcement individuals in my circle of family and friends. I know of NOT ONE who does not have the highest integrity and morals and would would trust them with my life and fortune. I'm sorry you have no confidence in the profession. I suppose you also consider all religious leaders pedophiles because of the actions of a few individuals. Don't just any group by the actions of an individual.

Only murder which would have been committed in this situation is if the person struck by the car had died and the only "simple" thing here is YOU.

Whenever they are dead they turn into saints. If I was on the hood of the car and she wouldn't stop I'd have shot her too. If you are hanging on with one hand and bouncing around it is impossible to aim and multiple shots would be called for.

I wonder is she were Caucasian would he have shot her 15 times. ICE and border patrol assume that Mexican Americans who look like Mestizos are illegal alies. To stop a car a couple of shots to arms would have been sufficient.

In addition there have been conflicting by witnesses. If she was fleeing she was afraid because of probably some crime she thought she migh be arrested. That's the only explanation for her failure to stope.

I found it telling that not a single Caucasian was in the vigil. I his aim was to stop the car, why 15 shots. It is amazing that after 40 years of civil rights Mexican Amerixan are last most discrimanated groups in the United States.

Exactly. I'm sick of hearing someone not listening to officers (or putting officers lives in danger) & then end up shot or killed; Then we all have to hear from the bleeding hearts about how wonderful the person was and how maniacal the police are. HInt, when a law officer tells you to "stop", "surrender" or "drop it" while they are holding a gun on you; and you decide to do the exact OPPOSITE of their command, resulting you getting shot: that is totally on you.

Since when is it ever smart NOT to obey a command when someone is pointing a gun at you, and they are in a position of authority??!!! Utterly stupid. This woman's outcome would have been totally different if she would have listened to the agents commands. She might have been put in jail,..but she'd still be alive.

From what we know her death is 100% her fault!!!
