The college with the worst food in America

(CBS News) Of all the colleges in the country, The Princeton Review has ranked Fordham University in the Bronx to have to have the worst campus food.

Among the 122,000 surveys about campus life, academics and the social scene distributed by the college admissions consulting company for their 2013 rankings, students said the private Jesuit school "offers a sense of community and a true college experience within the hustle and bustle" of New York City.

What was lacking, however, was a sense of taste in the campus cafeteria.

One recent grad told the New York Daily News that she's had friends "who've found everything from bugs to thumbtacks in their food."

Fordham spokesman Bob Howe told the paper that the ranking isn't reflective of the campus' menu, but the school will "take whatever action is necessary to address the problems with our food service program."

The ranking just adds to the poor reputation of Fordham cafeterias. In April 2011, Fordham's student paper The Ram reported that NYC health department inspectors cited health violations -- including mice, roaches and poor food storage -- at four of the university's dining facilities, giving them shockingly high scores between 30 and 53 points (scores higher than 28 are unsatisfactory).

"I went to the Grille and got a salad," Michelle FlorCruz, who was then a junior, told her school paper. "I found a full grasshopper the size of my thumb in the middle of it."

At the time of the article, Fordham officials said they were taking action to rectify the violations.

The $41,000-a-year university, which Princeton Review says has an undergraduate program of about 7,600, also ranked #15 for Best College Radio Station and one of the best Northeastern colleges out of the 377 "Best Colleges" Princeton Review compiled this year.

The New College of Florida, a small public school in Sarasota, ranked second on the worst food list. The title of Best Campus Food goes to Bowdoin College, a prestigious small liberal arts school in Brunswick, Maine.

I graduated in 2009, and the food was pretty horrendous when I stopped having a meal plan in 2007.

I'm sure there are plenty of schools where the food is almost as horrible, but won't get the attention that the worst schools do.

Thumbtacks? Well, now that does sound unusual.

And for New York CIty, anything bugs smaller than three inches should have been chopped and diced during normal food preparation.

I hope they didn't buy into the semester long meal-ticket plan. With that kind of service anyway.
