(AP) PHILADELPHIA - A charity founded by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is calling off an internal investigation in the wake of his child sex abuse scandal.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday the chief executive of the Second Mile, David Woodle, says the organization is dropping plans for the probe into what past leaders knew and when. Woodle says the organization is "in a different situation now" because it's "getting ready to go out of business."

The Second Mile wants to turn over its assets to Houston-based Arrow Child & Family Ministries Inc. Lawyers for some people who say Sandusky abused them are opposed.

Woodle says the charity will continue to cooperate with all external investigations.

Sandusky was convicted of 45 criminal counts. He has maintained his innocence and awaits sentencing.

Of course they're dropping their investigation. You gotta know that at least several people at least had strong suspicions, if they didn't outright now, what Sandusky was up to. A pedophile doesn't start a charity to find and groom victims for over 10 years without anybody ever suspecting anything.

And they know there's a strong bet that they'd be opening themselves up to criminal prosecution if they admit that they knew or suspected what was going on.

Why bother to admit to wrong-doing if there's a chance nobody will ever find out? Because "it's the right thing to do"? Well, if somebody already knew, or suspected, what was going on, and they chose to remain silent, I guess it should already be evident that "the right thing" wasn't something the were worried about.

Besides, this way, if an external investigation implicates them, they can then try to plea bargain the whole thing.

Second Mile's conduct in this whole thing has already been sickening. Instead of waiting around for the "death penalty" like Penn State did, they decided just to commit suicide first.

Sandusky is probably receiving his own internal probe right about now.
