(CBS News) Chick-fil-A's public relations head died Friday amid an ongoing controversy over the fast food chain CEO's views on same-sex marriage.

In a statement, Chick-fil-A announced that Don Perry, vice president of public relations, died suddenly Friday morning.

"Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years," the statements said. "For many of you in the media, he was the spokesperson for Chick-fil-A. He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," the statement added.

A company spokesman, working with a third-party public relations agency, could not confirm reports he had died of a heart attack.

Perry, who joined Chick-fil-A in 1983 as the Atlanta-based company's first public relations profession, leaves behind a wife, three sons and a grandson.

According to his official company bio, he was responsible for "developing and overseeing external communications and publicity programs in support of key company initiatives."

Chick-fil-A flap sees calls for action from both sides of same-sex marriage debate
Chick-fil-A's political grilling

The news comes as Chick-fil-A faces increasing calls for boycotts among politicians and activists after chief executive Dan Cathy expressed opposition to same-sex marriage.

"I think we're inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, you know, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes marriage,'" Cathy said in an interview on The Ken Coleman Show last month.

Cathy has talked about his socially conservative leanings before, but his recent comments became a catalyst for pro-LGBT activism.

Although some conservatives defended Chick-fil-A for sticking to Christian values, the criticism was much more overwhelming and the company's public relations worked to control the damage.

By Friday, Chick-fil-A's Facebook page and website were full of defensive statements. It denied accusations it created fake Facebook profiles and claimed it had voluntarily withdrawn from Jim Henson's Kids' Meal Puppets because of safety concerns. The company also went out of its way to insist it doesn't discriminate.

"The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect - regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender," the company said in a statement on July 19.

It was inevitable that the assault on constitutional liberties would erupt in the face of society's ever increasing embrace of godless ideology. Scripture testifies that the 'Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty'. But it goes to reason that the opposite is true as well such that where the Spirit of the Lord is not, there is the removal of freedom. We deceive ourselves if we believe the Lord will continue to bless our nation if we continue to turn up our noses at His Word, commandments and laws. And the irony of it all is that the very ones who spit on His Word will be the ones that will be responsible for stripping society of the liberties it far too often takes for granted (we seem to have forgotten that Christian ideology laid the foundation for the free society we now enjoy). The recent actions of these misguided mayors is only a glimpse of what's to come if we continue on this course.

Insisting on separating religion from government is not in any way turning up your noses at God. The Founding Fathers specified that's the way they wanted it and I'm sure they would have spelled it out more exactly had they known people would refuse to pay attention. Letters written by Jefferson in those early years make clear Jefferson adamantly believed religion should be separated from government. When religion is allowed to run government you get Al Qaeda and the Taliban, a result of thinking individual's interpretation of their religion. Practive your religion as you wish but keep it out of other people's lives. They have their own ideas about religion and you have no right to push your on them through legislation.

von4037,

There are many different religions in the world. Each can say "Hello" in a different way, but the "Hello" means the same. Though there are many different names for God, don't get hung up on what different religions call him. There is only one that can shake the heavens and move the earth, and there is only one that can give life as well as take it away. God gave man different languages as well as different cultures.

Don't waste your valuable life getting hung up on what other people call "God." A rose by any other name is still a rose. Water, is still water whether you call it agua, H2O, or water.

So you stopped eating at Chick-Fil-A because the owner of the company thinks that homosexuality is wrong. Tell me, when are you going to stop buying gasoline because the owners of OPEC put homosexuals to death.

Perhaps his death was caused by the anxiety created from having to defend the bigotry and hate of his boss, while he did not carry those feelings himself. Inner conflicts are the most stressful and can have major health risks, including ulcers, hypertension, stroke, and heart attack. Something to think about.

This man did not die because of another individuals personal beliefs. To merely suggest that people who disagree with your choice of lifestyle might die from a stroke, or heart attack, etc. is pure bullying on your part and the same as threatening a mischievous child with the boogie man, Talking about extreme!

Liberals, you're hateful comments just prove how ignorant and uneducated you really are. I always say that Liberals have the IQ of a speedbump but that's insulting the speedbump. Lets see, 88% of all high school drop outs are Liberals and 92% of prison inmates are Liberals. Enough said.
