Aurora miracle mom Katie Medley: I thought my husband was dead

(CBS News) AURORA, Colo. - Among those in the theater during the Colorado massacre were Caleb Medley and his wife Katie. Caleb suffered a serious brain injury but Katie gave birth to a healthy boy. We had a chance to visit with mother and child.

Just two days old, Hugo Medley is being called the miracle baby of the theater shooting. He's a source of hope for his mother Katie.

"He really does, he looks just like his dad," she said.

His father, Caleb, was shot in the eye.

"It was awful," said Katie about being nine months pregnant and her husband wounded. "For a couple hours that night, I really thought that he was dead and I was going to be a single parent and I was going to bury my husband. I know he's hurt really bad, but the fact that he's alive was a lot. It was a lot because I thought he was dead."

Hugo was born Tuesday in the same hospital where Caleb remains heavily sedated in intensive care.

"He was in surgery," said Katie of Caleb. "He was having brain surgery while I was in labor. It was crazy."

After the birth, Katie -- along with baby Hugo -- was able to visit Caleb in the ICU. "We were the a matter of hours. They let us put him with Caleb and everything, which was really nice."

During the visit, Hugo "cried a little bit, which we were hoping for because we wanted Caleb to hear him cry," Katie said. "But other than that, he just laid there. He's such a content baby. I don't know where he gets that from."

Katie was unsure about how she was able to stay strong. "I think because I was at the point where I thought my husband was dead, that coming back from that is what gives me strength -- that he's alive and the fact that he's fighting so hard to get to us is what's making me strong."

She thinks it was crazy about what happened to Caleb at the movie theater. "There were so many people in that theater, it's like, 'How did he end up as one?'"

Then she got emotional. "He's such a good person and people love him so much. I don't know why it had to be him. But he's really strong and he's gonna make it through this. And we're gonna make it through this."

Caleb doesn't have health insurance. A website set up to help the family has raised more than $300,000.

"I'm so amazed by so many people who are doing this for us and I don't know how to thank them. I'm just so thankful. We're just so blessed. I just don't even know what to say. We're just very blessed."

Katie and baby Hugo are no longer patients. But the hospital is letting them stay so they can be close to Caleb.

Watching this video is heart wrenching yet Katie's composure and strength are inspiring. Katie Medley and I worked together for about a year in 2007-2008. She was a joy to work with and I know that Caleb, Katie and their baby Hugo make it through this. God Bless you Katie and your family! Sending much thoughts, prayers and love from Canon City, Colorado.

Thoughts and prayers for Caleb and family.

And hope... my family suffered a very similar situation. In our case it was mom who had the trauma. She is recovering and the baby is playing a major role in her progress. Read all about it.

Well, there goes that leftist theory about how people would "die in the streets" unless we have a socialized healthcare system.

I feel bad for the guy, but his wife just gave birth and they are uninsured? I don't think any of the victims should have to pay medical bills for this tragedy, but who the heck is paying for this child? I wish him luck on his recovery.

I have been trying to find out if ice would have helped the njuries at the colorado shooting. I have always heard that ice is good for trauma and injuries. they have plenty of ice in a movie theater. (same thing for when Gabby 'giffords was shot in front of a grocery store, gorcery sotores usually sell ice in bags 8-10 lbs,but the oint is that ice was readily available to the other people victim and while they were waiting for EMT they other patrons victims with medical backgrounds tried to triage people, pressure clean towels, elevation, lying people down and covering them with blankets or clothes to keep shock from setting in, etc but I never heard if anyone used any ice andI think it would help. I tried to write it into some blogs whe giffords was shot but Iguess nobody cared much after the fact. and I figured we would not see anything like that again, but low and behold, here we are so, does anyone know if ice on these injuries would have been a good idea or a bad idea?
