Colorado victim struggles for life as wife delivers baby

(CBS/AP) He said his daughter was in labor, but David Sanchez was waiting outside the courthouse during the hearing for Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes.

"She wanted me to be here," Sanchez said.

It was a day of both celebration and mourning for Sanchez, whose daughter escaped the horrific massacre at a midnight "The Dark Knight Rises" showing in Aurora that killed 12 people and injured 58 Friday.

Katie's husband and Sanchez's son-in-law, a 23-year-old aspiring comedian named Caleb Medley, was one of the victims critically injured. He is in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound to the head.

Sanchez said his daughter luckily made it out of the Aurora Mall theater physically unscathed, but she "is going to be hurting and damaged for a long time."

"We need to pray for everyone that's out there and hurt, [we] want to see that justice takes place," Sanchez said.

The Colorado massacre suspect

Sanchez was one of many relatives of at least five victims who showed up to court to see Holmes, 24, in his first public appearance since he was accused of opening fire on a crowded movie theater. His hair dyed bright orange-red, Holmes looked at times bleary-eyed and other times emotional as Chief Judge Wiliam Sylvester advised him of the case.

Tom Teves, who lost his 24-year-old son Alex in the shooting, sat in the front row and stared at Holmes during the hearing. Two women held hands tightly, one shaking their heads.

High schooler McKayla Hicks also appeared at court, her face still wounded from where she was hit by a bullet fragment. She was in the theater next door to where the shooting took place, she recently told NBC News -- one of the bullets had gone through the wall.

Meanwhile, Medley's family and friends created a website to raise funds for the couple because they don't have health insurance. The website includes pictures of Medley in the hospital.

The high school sweethearts had just moved to Aurora so Katie could go to veterinary school and Caleb could pursue stand-up comedy, according to the website. Caleb was working odd jobs at Walmart and Target but had recently been entered into a large comedy contest in Denver. They are expecting a baby boy, who they  have named Hugo.

Michael West, who describes himself as a close friend of the Medleys, wrote about how Katie described the shooting.

"I thought it was a prank at first, or someone playing along with the movie because it happened during a fight scene." Katie said of the shooting, her friend Michael West wrote on the website. "I didn't know how [Caleb] was, because there was so much blood, but he was still moving, and he kept running his fingers through his hair."

Authorities said Holmes is refusing to cooperate and it could take months to learn what prompted the mass shooting. He has been held in solitary confinement at an Arapahoe County detention facility.

Another victim of the NRA has to beg to avoid bankruptcy and even death because we don't have universal health care. Nice going NRA and GOP.

Want to know why he did it? Simple. Look at his hair. He's an attention junkie. Interesting to see how many times he was left alone as a child.
