(CBS News) The family of a missing New York woman is extremely worried after they got a chilling text message from her cell number: "The girl with this phone is dead was smiling."

Authorities said 26-year-old Rajwinder Kaur was last seeing in her Queens home Sunday at 8 p.m. when she was on her way to volunteer at a Brooklyn shelter, CBS New York affiliate WCBS reported.

Rajwinder's youngest sister received the mysterious message at 9:40 p.m. ET the night she vanished.

"I was reading it and it didn't make sense and I worried, what's going on?" the youngest sister, Gurpreet, told CBS 2's Sean Hennessey.

"We are very nervous, we are scared, I know Raji. She will never send a message like that," added brother-in-law Kulwinder Bhinder.

Kaur's family said they are anxiously waiting answers to what happened to Rajwinder, a social worker who recently became involved in volunteering at shelters. They tried to get the word out on Twitter and Facebook, but still haven't learned any new information.

Gurpreet Kaur received this text message from her sister the same day she vanished.

"Nobody has called. We've even reached out to our community, the Punjabi community, we put like news in the ... Indian [TV] channels and all that and we haven't heard anything from anybody yet," Lucky said. "We're really very, very worried.

Her family did not know what shelter she was heading to and have put missing fliers at dozens of them.

NYPD sources told CBS 2 that Rajwinder had sold some belongings on eBay before she disappeared and believe that she joined a cult. The creepy text could mean "the old Rajwinder is dead to you; the new Rajwinder is with us" the sources told Hennessey.

The Kaur family, however, is skeptical of that theory, describing the 26-year-old as a religious girl who wouldn't do something so extreme. They do, however, believe she is alive.

"Yes, I have to believe that," Gurpreet Kaur said. "We do."

Rajwinder is described as 5-foot-3 and 130 pounds with a thin build and medium complexion. The family is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to her safe return.

It's quite funny that the NYPD thinks she joined a cult! I don't see how an Indian girl who volunteered at a shelter would join a cult. It is very unusual for Indians or hindus to do so. Was she Christian? Even for Indian Christian, this is very unusual.

Being religious in India is totally different from being religious in USA.

I hope and pray, this beautiful women is found. Everywhere anymore is dangerous. I wish she had either drove to her destination or a family member take her to and from there. Why was the text as such? And whom ever hurt her or did something to her, (if they did) knew her because why would they send that message to her family? how would they know from her phone? Someone knew this women. If she is hurt, or dead, I hope they catch the Bastard/s and hang them upside down and burn them alive.

I really doubt the police think she ran off and joined a cult JUST BECAUSE she sold some items. They must've found more evidence than that to come to that conclusion. I hope they keep looking and pray she is found!

She was volunteering at a "shelter" - who do you think is in those places? Yes, some poor souls but add scum and human derelicts to the list! I'm afraid this poor girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time - giving further validity to the old adage: "there is rarely a good deed that goes unpunished".

I am praying that Raji, is found soon.
Why does the NYPD think she has gone off and joined a cult, just because she sold some items on ebay? That is quite a leap.
She is a lovely young lady, and there are a lot of creeps out in the world.

It appears the NYPD has been watching too much Law and Order. As for the "face it hon" post, that's about as callous and inhumane as anybody can be. Hopefully that was from some nut-case. I'd hate to think anybody in their right mind would inflict such pain through a post like that.

I'd be very disappointed in the NYPD if they actually think they can DISMISS this text message with a lousy, lame explanation such as THAT.
