NH baby hospitalized for burns after falling into hot washing machine

AP

(CBS News) A 5-month-old boy from New Hampshire is recovering from burns to 90 percent of his body after falling into a washing machine.

The infant, who Manchester police identified as Shea Giampetruzzi, was rushed to Catholic Medical Center and then flown to Massachusetts General Hospital Tuesday night to be treated for the burns. He is expected to be transferred Shriners Hospital for Children, which specializes in pediatric burn care.

Police said that the washing machine was set to hot when the baby had been placed on a diaper changing area adjacent to the laundry machines.

The boy's mother said she turned her back for a second and he accidentally fell into the water, fire officials told CBS Boston.

A preliminary investigation suggests the infant's injuries were the result of an accident.

His condition was not immediately known.

Just a sad accident here. To the people who are bashing on "Who puts a changing table next to a washing machine!".... you've never lived in a small apartment or home where space is at a premium.

They put these things where they will fit and sometimes, that means that they are next to dangerous stuff.

Why is the USA virtually the only country still using this ridiculous 1950s design of washing machine? They are very energy and water inefficient, and clearly dangerous to small children.

Because the fact is that Americans don't like to change and most homes are built with S M A L L laundry rooms where a front-loading washer wouldn't work, the door would hit the wall.

Lerianis6 - You're kidding, right? Americans usually have smaller homes than Europeans?

However, you ARE right that most Americans are too small-minded to change how they do things.

Even a baby needs to have just a teeny-weenie-weenie dab os sense. How much sense does any critter need to choose mild air over hot water, if given a choice, as this baby was given? Hmmm, I think I'll jump over into that swishing pool of really hot water to see if I like it better than what I have now. Whooooops! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Waaaaa! Waaaaa! Waaaaaa! I think mother nature is telling that baby if the hot water doesn't get him, something will. And if he does grow up to be an adult, he will be a Foxbot moron and listen to crap that is not in his best interest to believe, and vote for politicians that are out to give everything he has to the crooked rich and make him a wage slave.

The boy's MOTHER said SHE turned HER back for a second and he accidentally fell into the water. According to the report it was not the Father, but the Mother.

As long as the local DA's office refuses to file charges when parents are this stupid then they will never learn!

Accidents happen. It isn't always stupidity. People get hurt from unexpected things, and it just isn't possible to foresee everything. I raised 2 boys, young men now, and anyone who thinks an accident means a child has a bad parent has never been a parent. And hindsight is perfect, but life as it evolves is not.

My thoughts go to the family.

What about the laundry that has changing tables right next to washing machines? That's kinda asking for trouble.
