Anchorage mayor to be sworn in - from Honolulu

(CBS/AP) ANCHORAGE, Aka. - The mayor of Anchorage will be sworn into office Monday via Skype.

Dan Sullivan was re-elected in April to a second term, which officially begins July 1.

However, the swearing-in ceremony coincided with a planned family vacation to Hawaii to visit his wife's family. So a live video link will be established between Anchorage City Hall and an attorney's office in Honolulu.

A judge in Alaska will administer the oath, and the attorney in Honolulu will notarize his signature.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that the mayor flew to Hawaii on Friday afternoon to begin an annual family vacation.

"He just really wants this to be, 'I'm getting back to work. It's my second term. No big deal,'" Sullivan spokeswoman Lindsey Whitt told the paper.

Sullivan plans to hold the ceremony for his second term of office 1 p.m. Monday, Alaska time.

According to Whitt, the city attorney reviewed plans for the online swearing-in and said it meets the standard required by city code.

Still, Whitt told the Daily News' Kyle Hopkins that Sullivan plans to Sullivan plans to re-sign his oath of office once he returns from vacation in mid-July, "to cover all of our bases."

Interesting the people of Anchorage would elect someone who is so cavalier about the position. Surely he was aware of the date when he made his vacation plans...or perhaps, he may have thought he would not be re-elected?
