(AP) RENO, Nev. - Authorities say that parts of northern Nevada have been shaken by a small earthquake.

A preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.2 quake struck at 8:51 p.m. Friday at a depth of about seven miles. The temblor was centered about 16 miles southwest of Reno, and was felt by residents in a wide area around Reno and Carson City.

There were no reports of damage.

The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks later Friday night and early Saturday morning, including one that was magnitude 2.6.

Ben Judea here....
Believe it or not that tremor and the YellowStone super-volcano are interlinked. Yellowstone can not continue to rise without causing stress/relief points in the surrounding 1000 miles or so.

Being here in the town of Stead,City of Reno, the main shock was brief but strong and very noticeable. Lasted more than a two seconds therefore reminiscent of a slip-slide guake. The aftershocks reported but not directly felt by myself would seem to verify continual earth movement underneath of a slip-slide nature where additional movement would follow. Talking with fellow neighbors about the nature of what they felt and to describe the quality? The overall: a "drop" "slump" "fall" "fell" were the words to describe the nature of the brief but noted event. No sound was heard, no rolling movement, no shaking movement. More of a "hum...bump" event. The only sound was that related to a building related quality to shift with and absorb the movement. To be honest, at first I thought and considered the morbidly obese man above my apartment as having dead-dropped on the floor from a standing position, quickly reconsidering when I heard his heavy padding to the front door above me, grateful he was well and knowing what it was at that time. Until that point I was poised to run, ready to render aid to him, unsure of his young wife's skills in first-aid. They have a sweet two year old baby girl, thinking she desperately needs her daddy that calls lovingly to this little girl from their balcony as she plays among the honeysuckle bushes outside my door in the beautiful setting Nevada sun each evening. It is their time together, Daddy and Daughter, to share and play together. So happy it was an earthquake.
