Two kids found tied up and blindfolded in a Kansas Walmart parking lot

(CBS/AP) LAWRENCE, Kan. - Police say two children from suburban Chicago who were found bound and blindfolded outside a Kansas Walmart are in temporary protective custody.

Lawrence police spokesman Trent McKinley says the presumed parents of the children have been arrested on suspicion of child abuse and endangerment and will appear in court Thursday.

A shopper passing by noticed the children and contacted authorities around 10:30 a.m., CBS affiliate KCTV in Kansas City reports.

Police arrived and found a 5-year-old boy Wednesday sitting beside a large SUV with his hands tied and a blindfold over his eyes. A bound and blindfolded 7-year-old girl was inside the vehicle, along with three other children, ages 12, 13 and 15. All are in protective custody.

"Once we had that male in custody, we took custody of the children, two of which were outside the car, and we brought them over to an ambulance we had come out to check their welfare. Three remained in the car for some time before they would come out and speak with officers," McKinley told KCTV.

After the presumed father was taken into custody, a woman who was inside the Walmart was also taken into custody. Authorities told KCTV the two in custody are not being cooperative with police.

The family, from Northlake, Ill., was heading to Arizona when the vehicle broke down Monday in Lawrence.

McKinley says officers are working with Illinois social services to determine where to send the children.

All kidding aside, is it possible that these children had been abducted? From the article, it doesn't sound as though they've confirmed that the adults were indeed their parents.
