7 dead after car falls from NYC highway ramp

Last Updated 9:16 p.m. ET

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - An out-of-control SUV barreled across several lanes of traffic on a highway overpass Sunday, then plunged more than 50 feet off the side of the road and landed in a ravine on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo, killing all seven people aboard, including three children, authorities said.

The SUV apparently flipped over a 4-foot-high iron fence before landing upside-down on the property of the nation's largest city zoo. The cause of the crash was unclear, and police haven't yet said how fast the SUV was traveling. A city official said the guardrail's height would be one of the safety issues investigated.

The victims were three girls, ages 3, 7 and 10, an 85-year-old man and three women, ages 81, 45 and 39, police said. The 45-year-old woman was driving. The victims' names weren't immediately released. A police department spokesperson confirmed that all were members of the same family.

The Honda Pilot was headed south on the highway that cuts through a working-class neighborhood when it bounced off the median, crossed all southbound lanes and hit the guardrail, police said.

"Obviously, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed," FDNY deputy Chief Ronald Werner said. "It hit something that caused it to become airborne."

The SUV landed in a wooded area on the edge of zoo property that's closed to the public and far from any animal exhibits, zoo spokeswoman Mary Dixon said. The vehicle lay mangled hours later, its right doors ripped off and strewn amid the trees along with items from the car. Next to the heavily wooded area are subway tracks and a train yard.

It's not clear what caused the SUV to go out of control. The southbound side of the highway was closed briefly Sunday afternoon while police investigated but later reopened.

The medical examiner's office said it expected to release the victims' causes of death on Monday.

City agencies will be asked to look at safety issues on the highway including guardrail height, Bronx borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement Sunday.

"My prayers, as well as those of my office and all Bronxites, go out to the families of the seven victims," he said.

The wreck was the deadliest in New York City since the driver of a tour bus returning from a Connecticut casino in March, 2011, lost control and slammed into a pole that sheared the bus nearly end to end, killing 14 passengers.

In 2009, just north of New York City in suburban Westchester County, a woman carrying a vanload of children drove nearly two miles in the wrong direction on a highway before colliding with an SUV. Eight people were killed, including four children. An autopsy determined that the woman, Diane Schuler, had downed at least 10 drinks and had smoked marijuana as recently as 15 minutes before the wreck.

In June, 2011, in a similar accident, the driver of an Acura SUV going north on the Bronx River Parkway lost control. The vehicle hit a divider embankment, bounced through two lanes of traffic and plunged 20 feet down over a guard rail, landing on a pickup truck in a parking lot. There were no fatalities in that accident.

maybe now, after seeing this accident, the auto industry will improve the auto skeleton by adding rollbars on all suvs and minivans.

I'm sorry knewsterrrr, why wouldn't family and friends be READING this article???

Not that you care, but your comments are extremely disappointing. No, there is no law requiring you to care or be sensitive, but it's called basic human decency. It's called COMPASSION. There were innocent lives in the car...children who probably didn't have a choice of whether or not to get in the car. Has life made you this cynical? Do you not have friends/family that you care about? If so, can you try to imagine what it must be like to lose them? No one is saying you have to donate money, or even think about the family's loss past today, but it costs you nothing to have some sympathy. Not to mention, it's also pretty funny and ironic you're investing so much time and energy [by commenting/replying] into something you don't give two sh**s about :).

And what's up with all the name-calling? Idiot driver? Because NO ONE here has EVER driven above the speed limit? Highly unlikely. Even if she were driving at 49.5mph, ignorant comments like the ones I've read on here would still be made. Damn shame.

We should all withhold any judgement until the final investigation is complete. FDNY deputy Chief Ronald Werner had no business making unsubstantiated comments immediately after this accident. We don't have all of the facts yet! The family is grieving - why blame anyone at this point in time?

No one knows how this accident happened. My friends son (approx 25 years ago) was instantly killed when his car went into a tree in Long Island. He wasn't drinking, no cell phone, no speeding.....he had a heart attack and was only 45 years old. That being said, I pray for these souls and for their family and friends.

I don't the circumstances behind this particular accident, and speculation is crude, but it's a very sad story that's appeared in out media. Very best wishes to the family, (families), concerned. It sounds like a pleasant Sunday family outing deserved a far better ending.

Its not suprising that we see these auto accidents. Most drivers exceed the speed limit 10-20 hrs per mile. I do a lot of driving on the parkways always using my cruise control at the posted speed limit. I have people cutting me off due to the fact that I'm doing the limit. I never drive in the left hand lane always staying in the middle lane or right lane. The city and Nassau County have complained about how their in the red due to lack of monies. If people wish to speed than let them pay. Have an unmarked vehicle with a device that can monitor the speed and take a photo of the license plate while the unmarked vehicle is moving. The officer would never have to get out of the vehicle. On one day there will be at least 1000 tickets issued. This would be from one RMP.

Well it must be nice being as perfect as you! Never doing anything wrong, always crossing at the green, not in between, don't smoke or drink, never curse, or talk bad about others. I bet you even step out of the shower to ****. Who cares about all the right things you do! These people are dead and it might not be their fault. It could have been a problem with the car. It could have been the cruise control, who knows but I do know I don't care about how carful you are.

I'd guess the computer controlled brake problem resurfaced. You know, the one all the car manufacturers deny exist. One thing about computers, they "freeze" sometimes and the only way out is to reboot. That option is not available when the accelerator refuses to accept the command when someone hits the brake.

SUVs are as safe as any vehicle as long as you are not driving like a maniac. The real problem is people need to SLOW DOWN - but I won't hold my breath.
