(AP) AUSTIN, Texas - A police officer was shot and killed early Friday at a Walmart in Central Texas, and a suspect is in custody, police said.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the officer was shot in the neck and died at the scene. The department identified him as Senior Police Officer Jaime Padron and said he had two daughters, ages 10 and six.

Padron was responding to a call about a drunk man inside the store around 2:30 a.m., Acevedo said. The suspect attacked the officer as soon as he arrived at the store and Padron didn't have a chance to even pull out his own weapon.

"The suspect produced a semi-automatic pistol and shot the officer at point blank range," Acevedo said. The wounded officer was able to call for help using his police radio, he added.

The police chief declined to identify the suspect, who was being held at the Travis County jail.

"This was a routine call," Acevedo said. "What makes our job deadly is that there is no routine call."

Two Walmart employees tackled and held the suspect and locked down the store until another police officer arrived to arrest him. Acevedo praised their actions, saying they did all they were supposed to do. He said store video captured the entire incident.

"I am heartened that two brave souls took action. They tackled the suspect when they saw the officer was shot unprovoked," Acevedo said. Once the suspect was handcuffed, another officer gave Padron CPR and medics tried to revive him, but they pronounced the officer dead at 2:44 a.m.

Acevedo said Padron worked at the department for more than three years and had previously worked for the Austin airport police and the San Angelo police department.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman Dianna Gee expressed sympathy for the officer's family and colleagues, and said the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer is proud of staff at the store.

"The associates displayed courage under these extreme circumstances," Gee said. She declined to provide more details about the shooting, referring questions to the police.

Austin city manager Chris Ott lamented the officer's death.

"It is a sad day for the city of Austin to lose a member of our family," Ott said.

Pedro Garcia and his roommate, Sapna Sharma, who live in the suburb of Pflugerville, told the Austin American-Statesman they were grocery shopping at the back of the store when they heard gunfire.

"I felt like something fell really hard," Sharma said.

They said an employee told them there had been a shooting and that more than a dozen officers swarmed into the store.

I agree that gun control isn't going to stop what's been happening. Guns are already controled; felons can't have them. However, many felons do. Gun control is another example of "feel good legislation." It sounds great in theory, but how many hard-core criminals would say "Well, now that there are gun controls, I guess I'd better give up my piece."

I am no fan of GUN CONTROL. But heck, if we tried to pass "PEOPLE CONTROL--that is taking strange people off the streets before they have a chance to get a gun.. Then the republicans would be screaming about that too. something about a liberal conspiracy to reduce the numbers of republican voters..

To the Pardon family, to the two daughters, although I don't know you personally, please accept my condolences. There will always be "bad guys" out there and people like Jaime protect the rest of us from them - even to the point of giving everything they have. He is a true hero.

God bless.

Just another good reason for STRICT GUN CONTROL!

And many reasons you should remain locked in your parents basement

Just tell me how gun control would have kept this killer from having a gun. If you put "strict gun control" in to law then only the killers will have guns. No honest law abiding citizen will be allowed to have a gun. Alcohol in the form of a DUI driver kill about 100 times more people than guns so lets ban cars that can be driven by drunks. No better yet lets put back up cameras on all cars and save 20 kids a year and let the drunks continue to kill 100s of people old and young.

History has proven to me my opinion will not change a single solitary thing, it is merely an opinion. My heartfelt prayers go out to the policeman and his survivors. I'm really glad I'm old because I won't have to tolerate this BS much longer, regardless of why it happens. What we are witnessing is humanity in its purest sense. I feel twisted by the notion that I'm glad my son was still born and I'm sorry my other children lived. With any luck I'll die in my sleep. I don't have any guns but I do have life insurance.

I'm very sorry for the officer and his family. You are in my prayers.

The Walmart associates were very brave to tackle a man with a gun. I really hope they used enough force (oh, that's not very Christian of me is it, oops.)

This is very tragic, such a loss for his family. Our police and our soldiers deserve more respect than they get, in my opinion. Putting their lives on the line.

Wait until the press attention dies down. The Walmart associates will probably lose their jobs. Think back. Look at what has happened in the past to hourly associates that have done anything to bring press attention to a WalMart Store.

Walmart! Whats with all the people getting shot at Walmart lately. This store is like loser central now. Remind me not to shop there anymore. Time to place metal detectors at Walmart and for the company to make a no firearms policy in their stores just like in the old west saloons that checked your weapons at the door!
