7 dead in shooting at Oakland religious school

Updated 9:29 p.m. ET

(CBS/AP) OAKLAND, Calif. - A gunman opened fire at a Christian university in California Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding as many as 3 more, authorities said. Police say they have a suspect in custody.

Police have identified the suspect as a 43-year-old Oakland man named One L. Goh, who is in custody after surrendering at a shopping center about an hour after the shooting at Oikos University on Monday morning.

Authorities say he was a former student at the Christian school.

The deadly shooting erupted around 10:30 a.m. at Oikos University in Oakland, according to officials.

Police in nearby Alameda told KCBS that the suspected gunman was taken into custody in the parking lot of the Safeway store at about 12:20 p.m.

Police believe the shooter acted alone, though they have not discussed a possible motive. Those connected to the school, including the founder and several students, described the gunman as a former nursing student.

Officer Johnna Watson said the suspect is an Asian male in his 40s and was taken into custody at a shopping center in the neighboring city of Alameda. Watson would not confirm if he was a student.

Watson said most of the wounded or dead were shot inside the building. The industrial park in which the school is located also includes the county food bank and a local Girl Scouts headquarters.

Authorities earlier described him as a heavyset Korean man in his 40s wearing khaki clothing. "I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Watson said.

KTVU-TV reported that the shooter opened fire in a classroom.

Following the shootings, CBS San Francisco video showed a chaotic scene as heavily armed SWAT officers swarmed into the building and bloodied victims were carried out on stretchers and loaded into ambulances. Several bodies covered in sheets were laid out on a patch of grass.

Police also evacuated nearby businesses, and agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms arrived at the scene to assist with the investigation.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, told the Oakland Tribune that the shooter was a nursing student who was no longer enrolled. He did not know if the shooter was expelled or dropped out. Kim said he heard about 30 rapid-fire gunshots in the building.

"I stayed in my office," he said.

Deborah Lee, who was in an English language class at the time, said she heard five to six gunshots at first. "The teacher said, `Run,' and we run," she said. "I was OK, because I know God protects me. I'm not afraid of him."

Angie Johnson told the San Francisco Chronicle that she saw a young woman leave the building with blood coming from her arm and crying: "I've been shot. I've been shot."

The injured woman said the shooter was a man in her nursing class who got up and shot one person at point-blank range in the chest before spraying the room with bullets, Johnson said.

"She said he looked crazy all the time," Johnson said the victim told her, "but they never knew how far he would go."

Four victims arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment, said spokeswoman Jerri Randrup.

According to its website, Oikos University offers studies in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine. A telephone message left on the university's voicemail was not immediately returned.

How sad this is. But not everyone who carries a Holy Bible goes around shooting people and the N.R.A. had nothing to do with it. But a lost sinner did and needs to have justice done for those he killed. And these liberals need to quit getting people off without the death penalty for those tried and found guilty of murdur. And yet liberal religionists as well as political ones continue on blaming and falsely accusing the wrong people instead of the ones responsible for their own actions. So liberals stop it and stop having stays of executions for murdurers with the federal district coart judges,ok ? And a strong man armed keepeth his goods in peace, the Lord Jesus Christ said. And he also died because of mankinds wicked sin nature he was born with. And this is why he must be born-again in order to get to God's heaven. And repent of his sins against God and trust the Lord Jesus as personal Saviour and Lord God. Believing in their heart that he died for their sins on the cross,was buried, and rose from the dead the third day,and was seen of men, and returned to heaven. And he also said ,If ye believe not that I am he ye shall die in your sins. He was and is God manifest in the flesh. From God's word,the King James Version Holy Bible. Sincerely ;

So an ex-student in nursing, studying to "help" people, came back to a religious school with a gun after being expelled, and killed 7 innocent people for no reason whatsoever.

Seems like we should be looking at the cause of these terrible shootings that happen entirely too often today, and why Americans seem to have a bible in one hand and a loaded firearm in the other hand!

Thank you NRA gun nutz!

Sad and tragic but hardly surprising. California had just under 2000 murders in 2010 and leads the nation in this crime. California is also the state where if you don't do drugs you are a freak. Those of you that think strict gun laws are the answer, California has strict gun laws, move there. Other places with strict gun laws are Chicago and NYC giving you gun critics choise of where to live. lol

That was the point that I made Slow, no laws make a difference to the lawbreakers, they do it anyhow. The same applies to those that are deranged, this guy could have just as easily driven into a crowd with his car while having one of his fits of rage.

So, your solution (?) is to allow anyone to purchase firearms? Charlie Manson will be glad to haer that.

Add for Ryker: If others at the nursing school were to pull out handguns and attempt to shot the killer the most likely outcome would be that instead of 7 dead there would probably be 14 dead as the students would most likely wind up shooting each other.

Law enforcement professionals who spend their entire working lives considering appropriate methods of response in such situations say the worst thing you can do is bring out your own gun and start shooting. The NRA says exactly the opposite. I will go with the professionals and ignore the shills.

Where are law enforcement workers when you need them? Get real, just like this situation, when something goes down you are on your own.

Hey knucklecheese or is it Knucklehead. There are probably hundreds of gun smiyhs who have already designed a locking mechanism on many firearms. Have you ever heard of a safety mechanism on a gun. all that would be required would be to lock the trigger. Duh ! this isnt rocket science or brain surgery.

The NRA promotes a fantasy world where if a person does not carry a side arm that person will be beaten to a bloody pulp or killed. The NRA says there are no two ways about it. By using scare tactics they hope of increase sales for the firearms manufacturers who provide the vast majority of the money used by the NRA to allow their executives to live high on the hog while buying politicians at the same time. Their continued dragging down of this country reveals where their true alliegence lies and it isn't with the United States of America. It is with the gun industry and the gun industry only.

Make up your mind, is it the NRA or the gun industry that is sending us all to hell? Get real, if the NRA ceased to exist today, people would still be killing people with guns. Also, if nobody ever made another gun, people would still be killing people with guns. Guns have been a part of this country since before it was a country and nothing anyone can do will change that. You could outlaw guns and they would still exist and we would have a booming black market trading in guns. What is your solution?

The NRA repesents the gun industry. The gun industry has just as much of a right to have a lobby as any other industry. What I am saying is their pushing handguns by using scare tactics is wrong. If you would bother to read my posts you will see that I an not advocating elimination of guns. I advocate making handguns and assault rifles illegal for all but law enforcement. Handguns and assault rifles are used for attacking others, not defense. They are very poor defensive weapons and are more lilely to cause damage than prevent damage.
