LONG BEACH, Calif. - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that one agent was fatally shot and one was wounded Thursday at its office in the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building in downtown Long Beach.
ICE released a statement about the incident: "At approximately 5:30 (Pacific) this afternoon, two agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) were shot inside the agency's offices at the federal building in Long Beach. One of the agents died at the scene. The second agent was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The names of the agents are not being released pending notification of the next of kin. The shooting is being investigated by ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility, the Long Beach Police Department and the FBI."
A law enforcement source tells CBS News that an HSI agent -- who later turned out to be the initial shooter -- was called in to speak with a supervising agent and was told that disciplinary action was being taken against him. The shooter shot his boss, who is in stable condition. A third agent intervened and killed the first shooter.
Watch a report from CBS affiliate KCAL Los Angeles below:
Earlier, it was reported that two people died and one was wounded from the incident, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The Long Beach police official said the shooter killed one person, wounded another with a shot to the stomach, and then was killed. It was not immediately clear if the shooter died from a self-inflicted wound.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the case.
In addition to ICE, the federal building also houses the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Probation and Parole Office.
