Navy says 8 sailors discharged for hazing

WASHINGTON - The Navy says eight sailors have been discharged after a hazing incident aboard a San Diego-based amphibious assault ship.

Navy spokesman said Saturday the eight received general discharges following allegations they assaulted and choked a fellow sailor aboard the ship, the Bonhomme Richard, on Jan. 17, as part of an initiation rite. He said the assault was videotaped, and the victim treated for injuries the sailor received.

The action follows recent congressional hearings on hazing in the military, including the case of Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, who shot himself in a foxhole in Afghanistan last year after he was beaten, forced to do repeated pushups and fed mouthfuls of sand.

The Los Angeles Times reported the hazing incident earlier Saturday.

Funny i was in the Navy and when promoted the getting my crow tacked on was one of the highlight. Means you earned it. I also wonder if this had been Naval Officers if they had gotten the same treatment.
Think of how Patton was treated. He slapped and kicked two enlisted and called them cowards. He was not sent to court martial. If the tables had turned and if an enlisted person had grabbed him slapped him around then kicked him would they have been. Double standard for Officers and Enlisted. Hammer the enlisted never the officers.

hazing is almost the same as bullying/

There is a big blog flap today re DC teaching tolerance about gay people in the schools.

Re the gay kids its about preventing the not so dramatic suicides of several thousand each year, not so different then the 9-11 death count

We as a country have to teach tolerance for gay people especially, but it has to also be about also stopping bullying and Hazing in general. they are very much the same sort of thing.

Hazing-fraternity-military(same team) or otherwise is SENSELESS CRIMINALITY shelf defined.. to many have died as result of hazing from those on the same team.

Anyone who's into hazing someone has a strong depiction to enjoying inflicting pain on to others(sadism). SADISM is a narcissistic personality disorder... a dangerous menace to civilized society.

Good to hear the military is getting in front of this... these young BOYS in the military nowadays think the realities to life is based upon the remnants of violent video games ... and whose the one(game players) at the end of the day the super hero- for glory and fame. That's their attitude for some of the BOYS in the military.

We as a nation for the last 20 years have indoctrinated our boys with the sale of violent video games( millions of dollars) - teaching boys to inflict violence for fun is acceptable.. has entertained our boys growing up within the last twenty years..

Plenty of parents purchase violent video games for their kids with content of violence-gore-blood- torture-murder ...teaching our boys to win the video game thru skills of torture & murder... and so these parents have no clue what type of video games they purchase for their kids.. indoctrined as viewed by their kids.

There is no good reason for there to be "hazing" in the military. None. Never. If soldiers and sailors even have the time on their hands for such activities, that tells us we have too many people in the armed services.

im not condoning hazing in any respect, although the term "hazing" is very vague. however, if you are suggesting that armed forces members shouldnt have "free time" to goof off some, then i feel sorry for you. id like to see you go out on a ship, work essentially 24/7 for MONTHS and be secluded from family and friends and NOT go crazy. its hard for those who ARENT on the boats, let alone those who are. dont speak unless you know whats really going on. now go on, back to your burger-flipping. thank you.

Yes, I agree with that. There's certainly no GOOD reason for it whatsover. I don't understand how these "rituals" get started or why others go along with it. Nasty business.
