Homeless science whiz invited to State of Union

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. - A homeless New York teen who's a semifinalist in a prestigious national science contest has been invited to watch President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.

Brentwood High School senior Samantha Garvey has been invited to the Jan. 24 speech as a guest of Long Island Congressman Steve Israel.

Garvey's story of academic success despite financial hardships has gained nationwide attention.

Homeless N.Y. science award nominee gets house

Last week, she was named one of 300 semifinalists in the Intel science contest. She's currently living in a homeless shelter, although Suffolk County officials are renovating a home for the Garvey family.

Israel says he was moved by the aspiring marine biologist's story.

He's offered Garvey a prestigious gallery ticket. Her parents would watch from Israel's office.

Her father tells Newsday they'd love to go.

she is but one of millions of homeless including current veterans and those from the vietnam war. obama cannot claim one bit of credit for this teenager nor can obama assign blame for the teen's family homeless stattu. obama has potus for nearly 4 years and has done nothing for the millions of homeless. the buck stops with obama. magically obama found and spent one billion to overthrow qaddafi to save libyians while ignoring U.S. citizens such as this teenager and her family.

Nice that her member of Congress have invited her. To bad with all the political hacks comments making it political and naturally blaming Republicans. The financial mess was created by BOTH BOTH political parties you morons. I just hope Obama does not make it a political point against Republicans with her being there. If he does that will show me he is slime and does not deserve a second term. Again there is plenty of blame for the financial mess to go around to BOTH parties! I was a Democrat for over 30 years till being an Independent none running for President inspires me for the future of this nation.

How about other homeless kids? If children from homeless families suffer like this family, our country would have no future. This is one reason to say those who made the 2008 financial crisis are destroying America. Thanks CBS for the reporting.

Maybe the person making the out-of-line partisan comment should ask that the Republican "economy destroyers" take credit for making her homeless in the first place. That being said: I applaud this young woman, hope that she does well in her life and sincerely wish that all her dreams will come true. There are many other like her; and it would benefit society if we would just take the interest, time and money to help these young people make something of their lives. Of course, there are some who say: "It's not my problem"; as they count their ill gotten gains....
