PITTSBURGH - An 18-year-old Pittsburgh man has been jailed on charges he burglarized a local market with three teens and then posted pictures on his Facebook page showing the suspects mugging with some of the loot.
"Well, I guess they're just stupid kids," Detective Valerie Milie said Monday. "They thought they could put (the pictures) out there for their friends who friended them on Facebook to see. But the one kid had 200 friends, but not only were they friends, some of them were relatives who became concerned and called police."
Isaiah Cutler, the only adult suspect, has been jailed since Friday in the Dec. 12 burglary. Online court records don't list an attorney for him.
Police said Cutler, a 17-year-old and two 14-year-olds stole more than $8,000 worth of cash, cigarettes, candy and checks from the business. About an hour later, Cutler posted pictures of the teens posing with the loot on his page on the social networking site, police said.
The relatives who saw the photos "knew sooner or later the wrong person, the police, were probably going to see these photos," Milie said.
Although Cutler has been arrested previously for marijuana possession, Milie said the younger suspects hadn't been in trouble before. Their identities haven't been released publicly because they've been charged in juvenile court and released to their parents.
"The kids came home with shopping bags full of new Michael Jordan tennis shoes and clothes, and (the parents) said, `Where did you get the money?"' to buy such things, Milie said.
By the time the parents determined what happened, police were already tracking down the teens based on the Facebook photos and surveillance video from the store, Milie said. The grandmother of one boy called police after she was alerted to the Facebook picture by a relative.
Cutler faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday on charges of theft, burglary and conspiracy.
