Man who foiled "underwear bomber" sues airlines

NEW YORK - A New York man has sued two airlines for $10 million in damages for injuries he says he incurred when he jumped on a Nigerian man who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner with a bomb in his underwear.

Theophilus Maranga filed the lawsuit Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan. He named as defendants Delta Air Lines, Inc., Air France-KLM and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who awaits sentencing after admitting he tried to blow up the plane.

Maranga claims the airlines were negligent to let Abdulmutallab aboard. The Wappinger Falls man says he suffered numerous injuries after jumping on Abdulmutallab when he tried to bring down a Christmas 2009 Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight with 290 people aboard.

Messages left with the airlines haven't been returned.

I can't pay this guy's medical bills, I can't pay my own, but I wish I could at least add him to my insurance as a dependent. Failing that I'm watching this case, if he's pulling a fast one we will find out, and if he gets screwed over after having the courage to do the right thing I will try to help him.

Americans are so incredibly dense and quick to use any external event as a way to air out their moronic peevishness

1. $10 million is big enough to more than accommodate his damages. That's all, it's just a sticker that everyone already knows will be marked down *based on actual damages*. You nitwits, it's a negotiation. Always.
2. Airlines are liable for passenger safety and have paid damages for this reason to families of terrorism victims. In this case, they could actually pay a victim who lived.
3. Here we as Americans have a unique opportunity, hell, an obligation to HELP someone who deserves it, not plss on him like whiny little children who can't hold their discomfort at things not being *just* the way they want them.

This guy didn't sign up for a tour of duty, he signed up for a Christmas flight home or similar such. It doesn't matter if he acted out of pure self-interest or there was an element of altruism to it. HE SAW AN OPPORTUNITY AND HE ACTED ON IT, he didn't freeze like a scared little rabbit and then, for example, start whining about how it was all the fault of lawyers.

If you have ever played around with burning high explosives, you would know they tend to burn very hot with a self-oxidizing flame that smothering won't affect. It wouldn't be at all surprising for this HERO to have received second and third degree burns, deep ones, not to mention the injuries one might receive fighting someone who is on their last act and has nothing to lose.

If this guy got hurt doing what he did, he deserves having his injuries taken care of. Period. As for you whiny self indulgent little shts who don't like it, you need to start paying for the air you breath because you are a waste of oxygen.

This is why this country is in a mess. Do you really think Delta Airlines will pay this award? NO--they have insurance companies for that. Is it some special insurance company? NO--probably the same insurance company YOU or I have. Do you know how many premiums it takes to pay just a million dollar award? 1000 people have to pay $1000. Delta Airlines was not responsible for the terrorist (if anything he should be suing the TSA). And he was NOT injured seriously or it would have been all over the news. The underwear bomber came o so close to completing his terror mission but we still have stupid people going through the airports complaining about the security screening. If the underwear bomber suspect doesn't make them understand the necessity of complete screening of passengers, i'm afraid that there is just no hope for America.

I don't doubt that most people aren't awear that a witness saw a suspicious looking well dressed man bring Abdulmutallab to the airport and asked security to let him on the plane even though he didn't have a passport, no lugage and paid cash for a one way ticket.

A witness on the plane saw a man pull out a camcorder just moments before and tape the whole event.

I believe the bomb was never intended to go off, there wasn't a need to have to kill everyone on the plane in order to accomplish their goal, which was to bring about their oppressive homeland security agenda.

I am not a fan of lawsuits, but the timing is based on the statutes of limitations where in some states, you can wait up to 2 years to file such that the full ramifications of your injuries may develop. I am not claiming he has any, but that is the way the law works.

I would like to congratulate the New York man on his lawsuit, he was a selfless HERO which we could respect and is now nothing more that a greedy opportunist. Not much of an inspiration to us any longer. I was surprised he didn't sue Fruit of the Loom as well.
