BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas - Five family members, including two children, were killed Monday night when their single-engine aircraft crashed in Brazos County, according to authorities.

The flight originated in Atlanta, stopped in Jackson, Miss., and was headed for Waco, Texas, when the six-seater Piper plane crashed in a field near Bryan around 10 p.m.

Authorities say it's not clear if weather played any role in the crash.

Parts of northwest Texas have received heavy snow, but last night's crash took place hundreds of miles south and east of the areas of the state facing the most severe weather conditions.

Weather reports from the time of the crash indicate overcast skies, and a storm may have been moving through the area.

CBS Affiliate KHOU reports Texas Department of Public Safety officials said the pilot contacted the tower in Fort Worth and was instructed on how to avoid the rough weather, but the plane flew in the opposite direction instead.

Two adult males, one adult female, one teen female and a 2-year-old boy were aboard the plane. Authorities confirm they all share the same last name.
