Kittens discarded in cat food bag rescued by dog

Regan, the dog who saved the day by rescuing two kittens from a discarded cat food bag / WHOTV

Two kittens who were thrown mercilessly into a a bag and then dumped in the middle of the road are now available for adoption from and Iowa rescue group. But if it weren't for the heroic actions of dog named Reagan, they probably would not have survived.

WHOTV reports that the two kittens, named Tipper and Skipper, were sealed in a Meow Mix bag with the rest of the litter and then left in the street. The bag had been run over by a vehicle, killing some of the kittens and making it difficult to tell exactly how many cats were inside. Somehow, Tipper and Skipper survived. "It was not a pretty sight," Linda Blakely from Iowa's Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary said.

That's when Reagan stepped in. He grabbed the bag, and carried it home. He didn't stop whining until his owner opened the bag. Covered in the blood and remains of the kittens who were killed, she found two seriously injured survivors.

"The instinct of the dog was to nurture and not kill the kittens. With all the blood some dogs would have responded to the scent. Reagan the dog is a hero," Blakely said.

Tipper and Skipper were traumatized and weak from the experience, and had to be fed with a bottle every two hours. They have recovered, and are now available for adoption. Blakely believed their their survival is proof that there is always a way to make things right, and wanted to remind pet owners that there's always a safe method to finding a new home for pets if you are unable to take care of them.

Transatlantique: call me a hypocrite if you like. I eat meat, yes - never said I didn't. I have no issue with vegetarianism and veganism, as my sister and mother have been vegetarians for more than 20 year. I've been an animal rescuer for a number of years, and that is where I speak from about animal abuse. Animal abuse will not stop even if every person stops eating meat. After all, we can't even respect other humans (whom we don't eat).

Good dog! Baaaaaaad human that did that to the kittens. We have a cat that was rescued from a garbage can where someone had disposed of him and his siblings in a garbage bag which was tossed into a trash can. He's a little sweetheart.

What amazes me is how people cringe at this bad thing, but happily grab a hamburger or chicken sandwich for lunch. Our meat eating culture fosters the idea in some people's heads that animals are objects. I became a vegetarian because I saw the HBO documentary on the treatment of animals, including cats and dogs, in China where they boil and/or skin them alive.

If we had a vegetarian culture, these things would happen seldom if at all.

Whilst cats cannot be vegetarians, dogs can. This dog was obviously fed and well attended, and that is why he or she didn't eat the kittens. However, I'd like to think it was the dog's personal love and respect of other living things. Maybe it was both.

Transatlantique, you are sadly misguided. Dogs are primarily meat-eating scavengers. They CANNOT be 'turned' into vegetarians without inducing severe health problems. Humans, likewise, are not built to forgo meat all of their lives. I should know. I was a vegetarian, then a vegan, for several years. Never again. I've owned cats most of my adult life, and have cared greatly about them. Your sanctimonious attitude sickens me. You should understand that compassion, not condescension and hate, is the way to a happier life. There is no 'meat-eating culture' as you describe, and getting all of your information about meat from an HBO documentary is like getting your facts from Sesame Street.

There will be no culture, and has been no culture, EVER, that has completely forsaken meat. Even Hindus ate a ton of insects in their food back in the days before more thorough inspections were order of the day.

Whaaa? The lights are on, there is sound emitting, but no one is home. If there was a god, this wouldn't have happened to these animals because the a$$hole who did it would have miraculously died of a heart attack before they were sealed in a bag, and they would all have miraculously found homes. Better yet, they wouldn't have been born in the first place because the idiot who didn't spay the mother or neuter the father would have found the better sense to do so.

Now do you get it? Animals are better than people, and as far as I've been shown, there is no god of those people. If a god created people in "his" image, then that god needs to go back to design school and try again. Yes, I'm also talking about my own flaws.

Transatlantique, Animals are NOT better than humans. They are completely different. Life is life. Are you sure YOU aren't the one that needs to turn on your brain and actually THINK??!

Dogs don't love and respect life..they are carnivores and SCAVENGERS! If left to fend for themselves, they will form a pack and exploit whatever opportunity is left to them. And they will breed like rats if not spayed and neutered. Their digestive systems are not very efficient, so they will often eat their own feces..or forage for another animal's scat if necessary.

Maybe I should wish YOU will have a heart attack soon because you wished ill will on another human...?

Jesus is Lord, yes He is. We can do whatever we want with them? I would turn off my computer and start reading my bible asking God to open my understanding and to please give me Godly wisdom, because you are absolutely lacking it. I am at a loss for words that one who claims to serve the same Jesus as I do has such a misleading understanding of His word. And to share such a statement with a world that is reaching for the truth and true love! A heart that seems hardened and deceived. Wether or not animals have a soul is irrelevant. To treat life with such a hellish view is not of my Father from whom ALL LIFE COMES. You have disregarded the Word of God to the highest degree.

Please, Religion has no place in this story. This dog was tender and caring and was there at the right time and knew what had to be done-find help for these poor injured kittens.

SHAME on the person who did that to those babies. You couldn't at least sneak that stupid bag onto the parking lot of an animal shelter???? FIX YOUR CAT! There are programs out there that make it super cheap!
