Oops! Kentucky dad leaves baby in grocery cart

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Police say a central Kentucky father trying to load groceries and his three children into a vehicle after a shopping trip forgot one thing — his 6-month-old infant.

It happened Tuesday at a Kroger in Jessamine County, WLEX-TV reported. The father left the baby in a grocery cart after unloading everything else and drove away.

A few minutes later, a couple found the baby and took the child back into the store to call police.

Nicholasville police officer Kevin Grimes says the father quickly figured out what he forgot and also called police while turning around to get back to the store.

Grimes says the man was "totally distraught" about the mistake. He says no charges will be filed, but the case will be handed over to social services.

's so easy to judge others, but we do not know anything about this man's life. I once drove away with my youngest still in the daycare's parking lot, thinking that he'd gotten in the car. He had only put in his backpack and closed the door, and was going to walk around to the other door. It only took a minute to realize he wasn't with me, but, as others have said, it's a mistake you only make once. How many of us have been driving, and realized suddenly that there is another car you never saw because your mind was so internally focused? How many of us have driven past our exit because your mind was so busy? Life is challenging, and there's nothing easy or convenient about parenting. I would definitely not hold it against this father. As a mom, in the moment, I'm sure I would freak out, but the child is safe, and dad realized what happened.

My parents said they forgot to put me to sleep once - and apparently I fell asleep in my high chair and used my bowl of cereal as a pillow.

4 kids, and trying to do grocery shopping - soooo scary that that happened, but they guy's understandably probably exhausted. Not an easy job being a parent to young kids ...

Normally, I would always get my child into the car FIRST, then load the groceries but that was just the way I did things.

You are so methodical. Others should learn from you.

Years ago, there was a case of a family driving cross -country and left one of their kids at a gas station. They had driven for several hours before they realized same.

I can't imagine not ensuring that all of your kids are safe......

He's damn lucky an honest couple found the baby.

This reminds me of the time some relatives were coming over for dinner. They had about six kids at this point and when they got to our house realized one of them was missing. They'd accidentally left the toddler in his crib napping. It was a good thing they only lived a couple of miles away but my goodness, they felt like the most horrible parents in the world!

It's a good thing he noticed when he did. It's no excuse, but having 4 kids going in different directions can be just a little distracting. I had a hard enough time taking care of just one.

Yes, it is an excuse, to be blunt and an acceptable one. It's time to get off the thinking that parents have to 'perfect'.... I don't know of ONE parent that has not done something like this.

I think we are on the same page, but perhaps you are a little more 'blunt'. In a scene from 'Fiddler on the Roof' as the family is forced to leave town Tevye yells, "Zeitel, Don't forget the baby!" and these are ultra-family people in a much less technology oriented society.
