Chemical bomb thrown at Occupy Maine camp

PORTLAND, Maine - Police are looking for the person they say threw a chemical bomb at the Occupy Maine encampment in Portland.

Police responded around 4 a.m. Sunday morning to an explosion in Lincoln Park at Congress and Pearl Streets.

Nobody was injured in the incident, reports CBS Affiliate WGME, but the homemade bomb - made up of chemicals poured into a plastic Gatorade container - could have caused serious injury.

Police said the bomb was thrown into the camp's kitchen, a tarped area where food is cooked and served.

Stephanie Wilburn, who was at the camp at the time, told WGME that she heard a "clank" when a car drove by, and then witnessed an explosion about three feet away from her, under a table.

A friend who checked out the scene found the remains of a Gatorade bottle that had contained Drano and tin foil.

"It was kind of scary," Wilburn said.

"I lost hearing overnight, and I also got a sore thoat from inhaling the Drano smoke. So it was not very fun at all," she said.

Police Chief Michael Sauschuck said detectives don't necessarily believe Occupy Maine was the sole target because another device was set off elsewhere that night.

Sauschuck described the device Monday as the type often associated with teenage pranks. But he said police are taking it seriously because someone could've been hurt.

No arrests have been made.

If someone can stand 3 feet away from the explosion from a chemical bomb and be OK, it sounds like a pretty small "bomb". This has to be the work of a bunch of bored teenagers. However, it is absolutely wrong to do something like this and i hope the police find them.

I doubt very seriously that this "bomb" did anywhere near the damage the "occupy people" are doing to property, not even counting the damage done to taxpayers for the cost of overtime for police. The "occupy people" have the gall to talk about greed. They want others to pay for their student loans and health care. They seem to think the government should take earnings from working Americans on Wall Street and other businesses, and give the money to them - for nothing. I haven't seen this level of greed in a long time.

The "occupy people" are some of the most greedy I have ever heard of. I can't believe that some Americans take them seriously. Many of them are socialist, bent on changing 200 years of being one of the most successful democratic republics in history into a breeding ground of mediocrity - socialism. Socialism fails to take into account human nature, so the system is doomed to fail - and it has all over the world. The "occupy people" can't see past the nose on their faces, and they are incredibly self centered and greedy.

A picture is worth a thousand words. The violent outbursts and destruction of property are coming from the occupiers. Additionally, I have never heard of a tea party member defacating or urinating outside. Those little rituals come from pee party.
