Wal-Mart cuts some health care coverage

NEW YORK - Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's largest private employer, is scaling back health care coverage for future part-time workers while raising premiums for many of its full-time workers, particularly tobacco users.

The discounter, which employs more than 1.4 million workers, said that rising health care costs are forcing it to eliminate health care coverage for future part-time workers who work less than 24 hours a week. Many workers will also see their premiums rise, and the company will be reducing by half the amount it contributes for health care expenses that are not covered under their plan. Tobacco users will particularly be hit hard, seeing premiums increase by about 40 percent, the company said.

Greg Rossiter, a Wal-Mart spokesman, said that the decision was not in response to the new health care law but rather to the harsh realities of escalating health care costs.

"Health care costs are continuing to go up faster than anyone would like," said Rossiter. "It is a difficult decision to raise rates. But we are striking a balance between managing costs and providing quality care and coverage."

Rossiter said the premium increases vary by plan, but noted that for the most popular health care plan, an associate who paid $11 per pay period, will be paying $15 per pay period next year. He noted that tobacco users with a spouse would pay $141 per pay period for one plan as compared with $108 per pay period for a non-tobacco user.

Rossiter reasoned that "tobacco users consume 25 percent more health care services than non-tobacco users."

The company noted that preventative care such as annual checkups and mammograms remain fully covered. But Wal-Mart will now provide $500 for families to use for health care expenses that are not covered, down from $1,000. For individuals, Wal-Mart will contribute $250 for associates, down from $500.

Rossiter also noted that while eligibility rules for new part-time associates have changed, it will not change for current associates. For those who average 24 hours to 33 hours a week, their children will still be able to be covered. Their spouses had never been eligible.

The moves come as the discounter is working hard to reverse nine straight quarters of decreases in revenue at stores open at least a year, and may see a gain by the third quarter. Like many other retailers, Wal-Mart has been on a campaign to cut costs by having more workers on duty during peak sales times without being overstaffed during lulls. But the company's cuts on health care represent a reversal from only a few years ago when Wal-Mart, under pressure from union-backed groups, announced that it would provide health care coverage to part-time workers, including those who work less than 24 hours a week, after one year on the job. Prior to that, part-time workers had to work at Wal-Mart for two years before being eligible for coverage. It also lowered premiums and lowered co-pays for prescription drugs.

Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, Ark., defines full-time workers as anyone who works 34 or more hours per week. Rossiter declined to say how many part-time workers it has, but he noted that a majority of its workers are still full-time employees.

The democrats are h**l bent on making sure more companies go overseas by making it too expensive to hire Americans here. Lets see, you have 10 employees. Salary and benefits cost $50,000 each before you've even sold anything. Move out and hire at $6.50 an hour and stay in business and compete in the marketplace and grow your business. And remember, it's YOUR business, not Obama's or anyone elses. Hmmm, what to do?

If you want good inexpensive healthcare...go to Thailand. In Thailand they have great private care and good universal heathcare.
Costs for everything from heart bypass to colonoscopies are 1/5 to 1/10th the cost of the US.
For the past 6 years we've been saving up all our medical and dental problems and making a once a year visit to Thailand where they are now catering to people from overseas.
The cost??...just a fraction of what I would have to pay out of pocket in the US. For example, last November I had an Endoscopic balloon dilation for a condition known as dysphagia. The specialist in the US said the operation would cost me $2500. (His bill for the 15 minute consultation was $250.) I decided to wait until I got to Thailand and had it done in at Chulalonkorn public hospital...cost $100 including biopsy, (all I needed for ID was my US passport. No questions asked!!)

The US system is controlled by the AMA, drug companies and Insurance industries. They wine and dine politicians in order to squeeze more money out of American's.

In Thailand, believe it or not, I can actually buy US medications CHEAPER than US residents. For example, my wife takes Fosamax Plus D...$75 for a months supply. In Thailand the same drug is $50. Why? Because the Thai government negotiates drug prices with US suppliers. If they can't agree on a low price...they don't get to sell their drugs in Thailand.

Want good inexpensive healthcare..FORGET THE USA.

Many of the Walmart have banks in their stores now. They really "encourage" their employee's to bank there so Walmart can have more income from the money that is direct deposit to the employee's bank account..they then make a profit on the money the salary they paid to the employee..sorta reminds me of the "company store"...I owe my soul to the company store....These banks are open on Sunday in our town...how can Banks be open on Sunday?? I thought there was a federal law against banks being open on Sunday....

I would like to know the percentage of employees that are part-time..I suspect that the number is probably close to 85%..Everyone I know at our local Walmart work their part-time and their boss is very strict about the employee's not working more than the scheduled hours. One person I know injured is arm (and not at work but at home) and he was told if he didn't show up for work he would lose his job...so he worked with a very painful injury to his arm..he needed the job to help support his family...I would never work at Walmart..I would rather wash dishes in a diner than work at Walmart.

I was working at Target where I met a guy who was fired from Wal Mart for having the flu and not being able to work for 3 days. Target was a nightmare too, and I was only there for 3 weeks. I'm not sure how long he lasted, but because of the stress, big box stores have a high turnover rate anyway. I don't know how or why anyone could last there for more than a month.

@Drievelphobe001, it sounds like you really don't understand what is going on. You are obviously removed, and I would bet that you don't work in retail. If not, you have no idea what its like.

The Walton's are the richest people and they are selfish people too. They want all the money for themselves. Well, ole Sam couldn't take his money with him, could he!.
The best thing we as citizens could do would be to boycott Walmarts and picket the stores. If we don't buy their Chinese junk, they soon will go out of business. Don't buy any of your Christmas gifts there either. We as a nation have got to stick together and stand up to these companies. Walmart have driven many business's out of our town. I buy from our other local grocery stores. The meat and produce are much better and I am helping support our neighbors and our town.

Walmart is in business to make money. That is why they sell everything they can including tobacco. These places are disgusting, appealing only to the lowest earners in our society. The patrons of Walmart cannot be coerced into boycotting. They are too stupid to understand and simply purchase the cheapest stuff they can find.

@Drivelphobe001, wow, I also would bet you never shop at Wal Mart because you'd never call yourself "stupid." Yes, there are some seriously challenged people who shop there, but they are a product of a capitalist society that put them in a low income bracket with little education. These kind of people are far and few in countries with social welfare like Sweden where people are taxed what they should be taxed here, and where education is a high priority. I only buy things from Wal Mart when I can't find it elsewhere, which is becoming less and less of an occurrence now that they no longer carry most of the things I buy.

Hmo rates remained unchanged for non smokers with slight increases on dental plans. As far as the part time associates if people would open their availability then they would get more hours. the problem is people want to work 8-5 m-f and not be there when customers need them. There is so much more to the story and you guys once again missed the boat. Are you in the Unions pocket also?

You sound like a Walmart spokesperson. The peopel I have spoken to that work at Walmart,and the reports I have seen disagree with your facts about the employees getting more hours? If they had hours available for this top happe, and it wasn't as you suggest, wouldn't the stores have a hard time staying open? I think they have all of the hours covered with part time employees by design. ANother note, who cares what you could get your HMO costs for? Health insurance for employees is a cost of doing business like commodity pricing. You don't screw your own employees over business costs rising when you are pulling in $16 BILLION of net income to shareholders. This is just how Wlmart operates. They are willing to sell out anyone to make a few dollars. Eventually it will lead to their collapse because so many Americans will not be able to afford Walmart.

Bought and Paid for by the UFCW thats why. I checked my HMO rate outside of Walmart and my coverage would be $40 higher if not through walmart.

This article is why journalsim is letting America down as well as our corporate leaders. The report states that rising costs are driving Walmart to pass on health care cuts and preminum increases to their employees. The first thought that came to my mind is that Walmart must be in financial trouble in order to do that to their own employees in this type of politically charged environement. I went to their stock ticker and locker at the net income so far for 2011 and guess what? Over $16 BILLION of net income for their shareholders (minus what the tope level of staffing skivvy for being the lousy henchmen...). Well, how I see it, Walmart is willing to squeeze their own employees, who work 40 hrs a week and still live in overty levels, in order to raise that net income figure a little higher for the shareholders. Guess what? The top 1% own over 1/2 of all stocks and bonds in or country. Looks like the 99% are again all chipping in in order to give another slice of the pie to our ethically challenged , self titled leaders of our country. Time to revolt is now.
