Schieffer: No surprise if Romney wins thanks to ads

In CBS News' exit poll on primary day in Florida, voters said that they are sick of the negative ads. "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley asked primary Washington correspondent and "Face the Nation" anchor Bob Schieffer in Miami what he is hearing. A transcript follows:

Schieffer: If Romney wins tonight, as every indication is that he will, it won't be hard to figure out why. He dumped nearly $16 million worth of negative ads on Newt Gingrich. Gingrich spent about $4 million. I mean, this thing has gotten so nasty down here that columnist Dave Barry of the Miami Herald said today that Florida should have prepared for it like they prepare for a hurricane. But he said instead of nailing plywood over your windows, they should have nailed it on front of their television sets.

Pelley: The candidates have gone after each other so hard, that somebody in the newsroom Tuesday said that the winner of the Florida primary might be President Obama.

Schieffer: Well, he hasn't won yet, but I'll tell you this: This is going to cost the Republicans. An ABC poll the other day said among independents nationally, Mitt Romney's favorability ratings have gone from the mid-40s down to 23 percent. So they're gonna have some stuff to do to correct this.

Once again, no facts, just opinion from the left wing controlled media (NBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC). Every election cycle, people complain about the negative campaigning, and every election cycle, voters fall for the negative campaigning and even pass it on. Bottom line, it works, so candidates continue it. Same with the "money buys elections" arguments. In fact they go hand in hand. The candidate with the most money buys the most negative ads, and the voters believe them.
If voters spent any time doing some fact-checking and insisting on issues-focused campaigning, the negative ads would stop. But, most voters are lazy and unwilling to spend time really learning about the candidates. No vote is for sale unless the voter is willing to sell it. My vote is not for sale.

Newt has been a human flamethrower his entire career. No sympathy for the man at all. Mitt is the superior Republican Candidate. Mitt tried backing off the Newt style campaigning and Newt didn't. For some reason those Negative attacks worked. So Mitt played Newt's game and beat him at his own game.

I'd love to see Mitt be able to show more of his intelligence in the future debates and messages, but if he has to maintain the pressure on Newt in that manner in order to win, then so be it. More important to crush Newt. Congratulations Mr. Romney. Drive on.

Newt, save us all a lot of money and time and just drop out. You're not going to win. Just waste a lot of money that could be better spent on helping the poor in this country. If you care about the country, drop out and donate your millions to the poor.

Seriously: the state of the economy is overshadowing the many accomplishments of the Obama administration. Most people don't "get" that he was always in it for 8 years, and at almost midterm by that scale, his results are on track.

But as far as I'm concerned, even the economy is pretty evenly counter-balanced by the very candidates the GOP is prepared to offer to the American people. I'll take four more years of Obama before I'd let either Romney or Gingrich anywhere near Pennsylvania Avenue. Trump jummping in too? Love it, please do.
