Iran sanctions over nukes seem to have failed

The U.N.'s nuclear agency is expected to report later this week that Iran is on the threshold of being able to build a nuclear bomb.

CBS News correspondent David Martin reports that the International Atomic Energy Agency will reveal new evidence that Iran is not just enriching uranium, but developing the capability to use it in a weapon.

Among other things, a satellite photo of an Iranian military base shows an enormous steel container apparently used to secretly test the high explosives needed to trigger a nuclear weapon.

"It's part of the evidence that's accumulating that Iran has continued to work on furthering its ability to make the nuclear weapon itself," said former U.N. weapons inspector David Albright, who has seen much of the evidence.

"They know how to make a crude or a nuclear weapon that they could test underground," said Albright, adding that they don't quite have a weapon they could use against their enemies.

The IAEA assessment scheduled to be released later this week contains evidence Iran has been working on computer models of a warhead small enough to be launched by a missile that could reach Israel and much of Europe.

"Some of the evidence suggests that they're within a year of that. Other evidence suggests that they're four years away," Albright said.

Despite diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, covert sabotage and threats of military action, Iran appears to be slowly closing in on a nuclear weapon.

Iran is a twinkle in the eye of threats when compared to India and Pakistan. Hell, even Israel is more of a threat than Iran will be for the next 10 years.

In the meantime, they are a good excuse to further bankrupt the economy by dumping billions more into defense. ABM sites in Poland that are designed to shootdown missiles that cannot cross the Black Sea. (measure it, if you don't believe me) An ABM in southeast Poland cannot hit the longest range Iranian missile launched from the northwest corner of Iran.

Brilliant deduction! The big question is why did it take so long to figure that out? They, like N.Korea, are not going to be stopped. They will continue to do what they want. They will let nothing stand in their way.

Why is it that Israel has been allowed to arm itself with nuclear weapons and has zero accountability to the IAEA or the International Community? On the other hand, when Iran look to arm themselves with nuclear weapons, they aren't upholding their obligations to the International Community and are constantly being threatened militarily. America along with the International Community should understand that this is a double standard. If my enemy arm himself with a gun, i'm going to arm myself with a gun just for security. What America and the International Community should be working towards is getting nuclear weapons totally out of the Middle East regardless of who has them.

Anyone wanna bet that Israel attacks Iran shortly before the 2012 election?

CBS ran a story a few wekks ago indicating that a poll showed that the majority of Israelis would approve of a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities by Israel. The U.S. politicians will be in the middle of a closely contested election and will be so frantic to curry favor with U.S. jewish voters that they will give Israel a blank check. The Obama Administration has already given Israel "bunker buster" bombs...

...and Israel may even use nukes if they feel that their very survival is threatened. They won't give a damn what either we in the U.S. or the rest of the world thinks if they think that their survival is at stake...

...which it is.

That is total bunk. Iran and North Korea witnessed what George Bush did to Iraq. These countries are aware that nuclear weapons equal security. North Korea armed themselves with nuclear weapons so what country is now going to attack them militarily? No one is going to attack them for fear of retaliation. Iran is looking to gain that same security. If Israel attack Iran for any reason, Israel will rightfully be labelled the real terrorist in the Middle East.

Oh really? Iran has made it clear that Israel is their mortal enemy...along with the United States. Iran arms and instigates those who commit terrorist acts against anyone who is a friend to either the U.S. or Israel in the Middle East. The precedent has already been set when the Israelis took out that Iraqi nuclear reactor. Nobody in the region wants Iran to have nukes and they will give the usual lip service to denouncing Israeli "aggression" and then secretly saying "well done" to them. They just can't say so publicly. Israel won't hesitate to strike.

The evidence is clear that Iran is just jerking the U.S. around on the nuclear weapons issue. Israel doesn't play that crap...they will strike and more power to them.

The world governments would not allow any country to engage in a first strike nuclear attack. That would be political suicide and bring on world retaliation that would destroy their country. The soviets and the other super powers know the end result of such a nuclear war and how something like that would spill over into everyone's back yard so to speak. We as a country could not sit by and allow that to happen either.

All this so called proof comes from the same people that told us Sadam had WMD's and that a truck in the desert was a mobile place to make chemical/biological weapons.
Now they ask us to believe that a steel container must be for nuclear testing of some kind. What if its just a tank filled with water? We will spend money our children's children will be working off and people will die.
Time to think and only go down this road if we have a UN multi national force like Kuwait, not a few countries ignoring the UN like Iraq.
