Bernard and Ruth Madoff attempted suicide, says Ruth in her first interview

(CBS News)

In the first interview Ruth Madoff has given about her husband's crimes, she tells Morley Safer she and Bernard were so distraught over the burden of those crimes that they attempted suicide together. Safer also speaks to Madoff's son, Andrew, for a story that will provide the first inside account from the immediate family of the man who stole billions of dollars. The report will air on "60 Minutes," Sunday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff tells Safer. "We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said '...I just can't go on anymore.'"

So Ruth and Bernard Madoff took a bunch of pills, some of them Ambien and possibly some Klonopin, Ruth recalls. She did not drink alcohol with them for fear of vomiting. "I took what we had, he took more," says Ruth. It was Christmas Eve, she says, "That added to the whole depression." But the pills didn't work. "We took pills and woke up the next day....It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up," she says.

Some forethought went into the decision, however, because Ruth sent a package to their son Andrew, breaching a court order before making the suicide pact. In the package were sentimental items, including jewelry. Three years later, Andrew asked his mother why she had sent him the jewelry. "And she told me that she and my father had planned to kill themselves...they put that package together beforehand and sent it out," he tells Safer.

Sunday's story will contain many previously undisclosed revelations about the family in the aftermath of the scandal. Viewers will hear for the first time how and where Bernard Madoff confessed his crimes to his loved ones, their reaction and the subsequent family strife of the past three years.

For all the people that Bernie ripped off financially, mentally, emotionally, and otherwise I feel for them. Many cannot retire, have health issues, have bills, have commmitted suicide, or have died of depression all because of BERNIE.

All of this emotion, sorrow, and despair, and tremendous darkness is being heaped upon this family, and it will crush them because the darkenss is widespread.

He shouldn't be speaking to his mom Ruth Madoff, or she shouldn't be speaking to him? Was she in the know all that time that her husband and his father Bernie Madoff was conducting all those illegal transactions, or was he in the know? This is ridiculous! Yesterday on 60 Minutes Andrew Madoff...(I got more to say. See my blog at: blogallyouwant.com/blog/73/Andrew-Madoff-does-not-talk-to-his-mom).

Ruth and her family profited from what he did and deserve nobody's pity. I think a lot of people will be pleased if her family gives back their remaining wealth instead of speaking against Madoff publicly. They are all greedy. I say stop this "sad sorry" and we should not shed a tear for them. They deserve the embarassment and ostracism.

What spoiled people they are...Bernie did this for his wife, sons and grandchildren...He knew what would happen when caught...Now since the GOOD LIFE is over they throw him away...spoiled and they should be ashamed of their actions
I have to also say I don't agree with his ladder to wealth and taking down all the others. I lost my fortune when the gov't ate up my 401k..BUT all those indiv.were in it for the quick dollar..there is no easy money just hard work....Ruth and Andrew is that what your afraid of?

It is pitiful that once again the media in search of sensationalist journalism talks with criminals to share "their sad story" on how rough it has been for them. Ignore them, let them creep away into their hole and never be talked to again!

what did they do,jump off a stack of thousand dollar bills and try to break something?
I find it hard, almost impossible, to even feel anyrhing except contempt for this woman who lived such a lavish lifestyle and pretends not to know where the money came from.
