(CBS) More Americans are going without health insurance.
In 2009, the ranks of the uninsured rose to 50.7 million, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau. That represents an almost 10 percent increase from 2008, when 46.3 Americans lacked health insurance.

(CBS) The precursor to H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, may be older than you think. Way older.
According to new research, simian immunodeficiency virus (S.I.V.) has been in monkeys for millennia, potentially putting humans at risk for the last 32,000 years and possibly much longer.
And yet, for all that time, humans didn't get sick in mass. Only in the 20th century did H.I.V. become a global scourge that has claimed 25 million lives.

BALTIMORE (CBS/AP) One of the nation's most prestigious hospitals, Johns Hopkins, became a crime scene today, when the distraught son of a woman hospitalized there shot her and her doctor before turning the gun on himself.
The shooter and his mother, Jean Davis, died. The doctor, David B. Cohen, underwent surgery and was expected to survive.

(CBS/AP) Doctors quickly learn that exposure to patients' germs is part of the job, and a new survey suggests many are returning the favor.
Nearly 58 percent of doctors surveyed said they'd worked at least once while sick, and 31 percent said they'd worked more than once while sick in the previous year.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (CBS/AP) Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist is being hailed as a hard-headed hero after the 20-year-old brushed off a crushing helmet hit and led his team on a 71-yard scoring drive. He even pounded the last yard into the end zone himself.
Only after the score did he tell the team's doctors that the hit had blinded him in one eye and made him groggy.
"After I initially took the hit, I tried to shake it off," he said. "But then physically I could not see ... It was blurry to the point where I couldn't see anything out of my right eye."
That can be very dangerous, especially long term, says Dr. Ann McKee, associate professor of neuropathology at Boston University and a leading expert on traumatic brain injuries in sports.

Scientists who spy on people in public restrooms say we're washing our hands more often.Surveys in four big cities last month found 85 percent of public restroom users washing their hands, up from 77 percent in 2007. It's the highest rate since these periodic surveys began in 1996.

/ AP/istockphoto(CBS) Tea Party-backed candidate Christine O'Donnell, who pulled off a stunning win for Delaware's Republican Senate nomination on Tuesday, has come under fire from the left for her views on masturbation, abortion, and abstinence.
O'Donnell first offered her views on masturbation in an MTV documentary called "Sex In The 90's" when she said "the Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery" and that "You can't masturbate without lust."

(CBS/AP) With more teens abusing cough medicines to get high, has the time come to stop over-the-counter sales of the products?
Not according to an FDA panel.
It said Tuesday that products like Robitussin and Nyquil should continue to be sold without a prescription, despite increased abuse among teenagers that has prompted calls to restrict sales of the products.

High fructose corn syrup is used to sweeten soft drinks and many other foods. (CBS)
(CBS/AP) Americans have grown so sour on high fructose corn syrup, so its makers want to sweeten its image with a new name:
Corn sugar.
The Corn Refiners Association applied Tuesday to the federal government for permission to use the name on food labels. The group says they hope a new name will ease confusion about the sweetener, which is used in soft drinks, bread, cereal and other products.
