New Era Coming for Breastfeeding in the Workplace?

(Credit: Oleg Kozlov)
Breastfeeding seems to be the uncomfortable topic that everyone knows is healthy, but no one really wants to talk about -- especially when it comes to the workplace.

However, when the health care bill signed by President Barack Obama goes into effect, everyone will be talking about breastfeeding -- especially employers.

That's because under the new Fair Labor Standards Act, employers will be federally mandated to provide women with breaks and a place to breastfeed.

But how will some women do it? After all, working moms include park rangers, bus drivers, postal workers and police officers. Where and when can they get a break?

It's not an easy question. Do you have a solution?

The Department of Labor is asking for your input through Feb. 22. You can contribute your thoughts here.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three out of four new moms start out breastfeeding, but the number of women breastfeeding beyond three months has remained low.

This initiative could make it easier for women to breastfeed longer. The effect on American moms and their babies could be wide-ranging, the health benefits numerous. According to the National Women's Health Information Center, a government-run organization, breastfeeding provides disease-fighting antibodies that can help protect infants from several types of illnesses and may reduce the risk of some health problems, such as breast cancer and type 2 diabetes, in mothers who breastfeed.

Could Parents Could Benefit from Changing Halloween?

(Credit: iStockphoto)
(CBS/AP) A Rhode Island lawmaker has filed a bill that would make Halloween in the state the last Saturday of October -- no matter what day the 31st falls on.

State Rep. Donald Lally Jr. tells The Providence Journal that he filed the bill at the request of a constituent who thought it would help people and businesses.

He says he's not sure he agrees, but hopes for a hearing on the bill.

The South Kingstown Democrat says holding Halloween on Saturday every year would enable kids to go trick or treating without worrying about having to get up for school the next day, while parents wouldn't have to race home from work to take their children out.

Halloween falls on a Monday this year.

(CBS/AP) Pittsburgh sheriff's deputies say a mother has allowed her three children to live in the same house as a sex offender.

As a result, 34-year-old Nicole Kovacic is now being charged with child endangerment.

According to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Kovacic, authorities say, knew 34-year-old Scott Kochis was a sex offender and permitted him to live with her kids.

Kochis, who was wanted for not registering as a sex offender, was found by police hiding behind a pile of laundry at Kovacic's Carnegie, Pa. home Wednesday night.

Kochis pleaded guilty in September to molesting a 9-year-old girl and was ordered to register as a sex offender. But authorities say he violated his probation by listing his home address as a residence his parents had moved from months before.

NEW YORK (CBS) Writer Amy Chua has had a lot to answer for this month. Critics of her provocative essay, "Why Chinese Mothers are Superior," and book, "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," have let her know what they really think about her extreme parenting style. Since the article and book's release, Chua has retreated on some of her statements, saying that she meant the essay and book to be ironic - not a parenting how-to.

Can Parents Learn from "Chinese Mother" Parenting?

But now, with outrage still swirling around her work - mostly from people who say they can't see her supposed self-mockery in it - Chua's daughter has responded, standing up for her mother - who once called her "garbage" - in a letter posted recently online.
