Ill. man wins hearing on police torture claim

(CBS/AP) CHICAGO - An Illinois inmate who says his rape confession was obtained through torture by Chicago police has won a new hearing.

In a 6-0 vote, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that Stanley Wrice, who was convicted of rape in 1983, will get a chance to have a court decide whether his confession was the product of torture, reports the Chicago Tribune.

(CBS/AP) YREKA, Calif. - Thieves in Yreka, Calif. have stolen $3 million worth of gold nuggets on display in a courthouse lobby, police said.

Investigators say surveillance video shows two men breaking into the Siskiyou County Courthouse early Wednesday morning and smashing a glass case that contained the valuable display on the area's mining history.

(CBS) CLEVELAND, Texas - Authorities say two parolees have been detained who allegedly occupied the house of a Texas soldier living at Fort Hood, who recently returned from his third tour in Iraq.

CBS Houston reports a relative of Staff Sgt. Sam Burbank and his wife saw the couple's possessions for sale on the lawn Tuesday and called police.

Ja Rule finds new posse, advisors behind bars

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Rapper Ja Rule has found a new posse behind bars - he's getting advice from a pair of formerly powerful men: ex-New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi and ex-Tyco International CEO Dennis Kozlowski.

Ja Rule (real name Jeffrey Atkins) is serving two years for gun possession and tax evasion at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Oneida, New York.

Man's drug conviction reversed, pot wasn't "usable"

(CBS/AP) ROGUE RIVER, Ore. - An Oregon man has had his marijuana convictions reversed over the issue of just when pot becomes "usable."

Josh Brewer served 60 days in jail and was put on three years of probation for exceeding Oregon's limit of possessing a pound-and-a-half of medical marijuana. On appeal, the Oregon Attorney General's Office conceded that the two-and-a-half pounds of pot that was found drying on coat hangers suspended from the ceiling shouldn't have counted against the limit.

(CBS/WBTV) LANCASTER, SC - A man was arrested after he allegedly dangled a 5-year-old over an aggressive, chained pit bull.

CBS affiliate WBTV says police were responding to an assault report on January 15 when they were told 22-year-old Michael Chavis Junior assaulted a five-year-old child by "picking that child up and holding them over an aggressive, chained pit bull dog."

(CBS) NEW YORK - The man accused of shooting a New York City police officer is also the prime suspect in a murder on New Year's Day, say police.

According to the New York Times, Luis Ortiz, who was arrested Wednesday in the shooting of Officer Kevin Brennan, had been wanted for questioning in the death of Shannon McKinney, whose body was found lying in front of a supermarket on Jan. 1.
