Malcolm X Assassin is Freed on Parole

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) The only man to admit shooting Malcolm X has been freed on parole, 45 years after he helped assassinate the civil rights leader in New York City.

State Department of Correctional Services spokeswoman Linda Foglia says Thomas Hagan was freed Tuesday.

He served the first 23 years of his sentence behind bars, and then had been spending two days a week at a Manhattan prison under a work-release program.Continue »

Woman Decapitated with Chainsaw, Husband a Suspect

DALLAS (CBS/AP) A routine mail route came to a gruesome end for one Dallas-area mail carrier, when he found the decapitated body of a woman lying in the street Monday. Police identified her as Maria Corona, and said they believe her husband, Jose Fernando Corona, is responsible, and have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Responding officers from the Lewisville Police Department reported finding two chainsaws at the scene, one of which was still running, with blood and tissue matter nearby. A bloody trail led from Corona's headless body to the doorway of the home.

(CBS)  The big plastic container of "Sweet Stripes" candy and the oversize bag of Wint-o-Green Lifesavers were newly positioned on the defense  table, at the start of week three of the State of Arkansas v. Gary Dunn capital murder trial for the killing of 19-year-old Arkansas beauty queen Nona Dirksmeyer.

All signs were pointing to another long week in court.

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Sandra Bullock has officially filed for divorce from her husband Jesse James and is adopting a baby boy as a single parent, a story posted Wednesday on People magazine's website said.

Is John Gardner Plea Deal for Murders Justice?

LOS ANGELES (CBS) The plea deal offered by the San Diego District Attorney's Office and accepted by John Gardner in the murders of 17-year-old Chelsea King and 14-year-old Amber Dubois has generated a lot of discussion, and dissatisfaction. In several online polls I have seen, up to 67% of the people were disappointed with the plea.

And while I can relate to the public's feeling that the plea was somewhat anti-climactic when compared to the shock of Gardner's crimes, I do believe that this was an excellent plea from the perspective of the prosecution.
