WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (CBS/KPIX) A 24-year-old transgendered woman has been charged with murder for the stabbing death of her 54-year-old boyfriend Alan Gray during a domestic dispute.

Akira Tajah Jackson - who is biologically male and changed her name from David Gavin at the age of 19 - is charged with murder with an enhancement, for using a knife to kill Gray at his Walnut Creek home last Thursday, deputy district attorney Barry Grove told CBS affiliate KPIX.

Kimberly Cates Murder: Guilty Verdict for Steven Spader in N.H. Home Invasion Death

NASHUA, N.H. (CBS/AP) Steven Spader, the teenager accused of killing New Hampshire mother Kimberly Cates and wounding her daughter with a machete during a home invasion, was convicted Tuesday of murder and other charges and was sentenced to life in prison.

Judge Gillian Abramson handed down the maximum sentence against 19-year-old Steven Spader, saying she could go on for days about the depths of his depravity.

The sentence ensures "you will stay in that cage for the rest of your pointless life," he told Spader.

Suspect Joacquas Haywood, who's 27, was believed to be a person of interest since the beginning of the investigation, when Kersh was reportedly last seen Nov. 3, 2008, leaving her job at Tria Market in Homewood, Ala., south of Birmingham.

SALT LAKE CITY (CBS/AP) In her second day of testimony Tuesday, Elizabeth Smart told jurors about a frustratingly close call with a Salt Lake City detective in a library just months after she was abducted in June 2002 by defendant Brian David Mitchell.

The detective had approached a robed Smart, who was sitting at a library table, and asked if he could look under the veil she wore across her face, Smart told the federal jury in Salt Lake City.

EAST ALTON, Ill. (CBS/KMOX) Police have confirmed that human remains found last week in a wooded area in East Alton are those of missing Illinois woman Crystal Terpening.

The 26-year-old had been missing nearly a month. Police are now investigating her death as a homicide.

HOPEWELL, Va. (CBS/WTVR) A 19-year-old Virginia man is accused of using the state's sex offender registry to harass a registered sex offender, chase him down, and then strike him with his vehicle.

Daniel Narron of Hopewell was arrested Friday and charged with attempted murder and attempted malicious wounding by mob for the Oct. 16 incident, according to CBS affiliate WTVR.
