Drew Carey's New Gigs

Drew Carey, American's newest game show host, stopped by today to chat about his new show,"Power of 10," which debuts on tonight on CBS. The concept is great and the top prize is -- get this -- $10 million!

As you know, Drew has also been named the new host of "The Price Is Right," taking over for the iconic Bob Barker. He told me he's going to keep Barker's famous sign off, and that Bob told him to just be himself. Drew said not much is really going to change, because tradition is everything on that show.

Drew was all set to retire and really didn't want to get back into TV, but now says he loved the idea of making people happy. He gets to give away money, and its not his own! He's a real people person, and as you know, is very funny, so I think he will have a great time and be a lot of fun to watch. Check out our chat this morning and the "Power of 10" tonight and tomorrow!

Pool Drain Safety

Hi everybody! Hope you all had a great weekend. I had a lot of my friends ask me over the last several days about a story that we ran last week about pool safety, specifically pool drains.

A 6-year-old boy who lives not far from me got caught in a pool drain and drowned a week ago Saturday. The same thing happened to a high school classmate of mine who was a fairly big guy, and people get caught in these drains with enough frequency that the CPSC actually named pool drains as one of the top five home hazards. I don't have a pool, but my kids routinely get invited to people's houses to swim, so this is really information that everybody needs to know. There are some very simple things that you can do to make sure your kids and others are safe.

And I've had so many people ask me about this story that I decided to run my interview with Nancy Nord here on the blog. The most important thing you can do is have the right kind of drain cover, and you'll see Nancy demonstrate the right and wrong kinds of covers to have in your pool. Because anything from hair, legs and arms can get caught and have deadly consequences.

Summer in the City: Dallas

We had a great time in "Big D" this morning with Kelly Rowland! It was a beautiful morning in Dallas and it didn't even get steamy until about 7 a.m.! Kelly Rowland gave a live, early morning concert for our "Summer in the City" tour. She was really friendly and energetic. Plus, that girl takes wearing shorts to a whole new level! She has great legs and can really dance. Her second album, "Ms. Kelly," is perfect for that and also contains some heartfelt ballads.

Much of the album is co-written by Kelly herself. She told me the song "Still in Love with my Ex" might be about former fianc?e Roy Williams of the Dallas Cowboys, but she was pretty coy. Also, she says she's feeling much better after collapsing onstage a few weeks ago in Nigeria. She got seriously dehydrated there, and she took great care to sit down between songs this morning and drink bottles of water. I had never met Kelly and was really impressed not only her talents, but her professionalism and sweet nature with the fans.

Now I'm back to New York for a concert at Madison Square Garden tonight with The Police! How's that for a fun day... bookended by two great concerts! What a life!

Breaking News 101

(AP Photo/Jim Mone)
Today was one of those days where our show changed completely because of the breaking news story of the day – the tragic bridge collapse in Minneapolis. When something like that happens, we take the entire show that we have planned and rework it -- oftentimes as the morning is going along -- to accommodate different guests, breaking news, and different segments that we do. This is especially true in a case like today, where there is still so much that's unknown – not only about the cause of the collapse, but also regarding the number of dead and missing, which changed throughout the morning.

Just pulling off a show like today's requires a lot of concentration and flexibility and can be both exhilarating and exhausting. It's usually pretty intense in the time leading up to when we go on the air as we are finding out facts and pre-taping interviews… and then with this type of story we routinely stay later to do updates for the Midwest and West Coast.

It requires a lot of teamwork and patience, even on the part of some of our guests. This morning both Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway were in our studio to be interviewed and had to wait a bit because of our updates, but they happen to be two of the nicest celebrities around, and both of them could not have been more gracious. By the way, this also caused them to run into each other in the studio as we were busy taping segments after the live show -- and they met for the first time! You can check out Matt's interview with Harry on tomorrow's show.

Sunshine And Summertime

(CBS/Hannah Storm)
Hi guys! I came back today after a long vacation at my favorite summertime spot, Martha's Vineyard. If you ever get a chance to visit there (it's off of Cape Cod) check out some of my favorite spots after eight summers there.

The best fried seafood ever is at a tiny little shack in Menemsha, called The Bite. Chowder and clam strips to die for. They even fry little bites of mac and cheese! For dinner, with a serious sunset, head to the Outermost Inn, run lovingly by James Taylor's brother, Hugh. And try the brass ring toss on the back porch. It took me a couple seasons to conquer it! The photo above is from that end of the island, called Gay Head. It's really remote and so beautiful.

(CBS/Hannah Storm)
We saw friends at the Vineyard, including Russ Mitchell and his wife, Serena. Russ and I discovered the day before leaving New York that we were both going on vacation the same week and to the same place! We met for lunch in Edgartown one day.

I believe we all are created for a specific and wonderful purpose in life. And we have within us the tools, creativity and intelligence to fulfill our divine destinies.

The true secret to success is simply being who we are born to be and doing what we are born to do. And while life brings a good portion of challenges, trials and disappointments, if we are steadfast and unmovable in pursuing our dreams, we won't have to go looking for success. With hard work, faith, and determination, success will come find us! —

Linda Fears: Family Ties

Linda is the editor in chief of Family Circle magazine. With kids of her own, she always brings a down-to-earth perspective on the issues we discuss on The Early Show segments, "In the Family Circle." I've loved writing for the magazine over the past several years and really appreciate Linda's enthusiasm about my input as a mom.

Read below to see who inspires Linda.

(Family Circle)
One of the great things about my job is that I get to speak with 20 million women every month about what is most important to me — my family. As much as I try to inspire them with ways to make their family's life fuller and to help them raise their teens and tweens in a fit and healthy way, I'm continually overwhelmed by what they do to inspire me.

For example, we challenged them to join our FamilyCircle walking program to help raise support for the American Heart Association. In just five weeks, more than 14,000 of our readers logged nearly 290,000 miles walking in support of this program. Along the way, they have written me countless stories of how they are feeling better, fitter, and more importantly, closer as a family. That, to me, is the ultimate inspiration. — Linda Fears

Sabrina Weill: From One Mom to Another

Sabrina Weill edited my book "Notre Dame Inspirations," and has continued to be a friend and adviser. She had a lot of input on this blog, and runs her own business, Weill Media, while raising two young kids. She launched Project: AngelMom, where moms help other mother's in need. Typical of Sabrina, it's an awesome idea.

Here she talks more about the inspiring project that is so important to her and how you can get involved.

(Elizabeth Lippmann )
I was a magazine editor for 14 years (I was formerly Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen) and often worked on stories about families in dire circumstances.

Recently, I launched Project: AngelMom, which publishes direct-donation information for the real people behind those heartbreaking headlines.

Since 100 percent of all donations made through the site go directly to the featured families, even small donations add up to make a big difference!

So, I hope you'll check out Project: AngelMom and change someone's life today. — Sabrina Weill

Michele Blackwood: Cancer Heroine

Michele Blackwood has been on The Early Show a lot recently, trying to help our audience sort out all the research available about breast cancer. There is so much information that can be confusing at times and Michele has an incredible way of sorting it all out in a very straightforward and caring manner.

I really admire her work in a field that affects so many women! Find out what inspires her.

(CBS)
My goal in life is to help women take control of their health by offering them sound medical advice mixed with old-fashioned common sense, through my Web site Cathedral Healthcare System.

I counsel women daily about their medical conditions, how they can help themselves, when to ask others for help and to make sure they take care of themselves. I hope by sharing my medical knowledge and my experience as a mother, wife, daughter and patient, I can inspire others to care for themselves, their families and their friends. — Michele Blackwood

Donna Ducker: Making Her Mark

One in 10 children in this country is born with a birthmark and, as you may know, I have a prominent port-wine stain under my left eye that I cover with makeup. I know what it's like to grow up with people staring at your face and making insensitive comments.

This can also be really painful for any mother whose child suffers from the same treatment. Donna Ducker took charge when her son Evan wanted to write a book to help other kids understand his birthmark. Donna spent her life savings and devoted all of her time to making his dream come true.

Find out more about what drives Donna.

(CBS)
The most important thing to me has always been to be a good mother. When my only son was born with a facial port-wine stain, the doctors said the best thing I could give him was self-confidence. So, after years of telling him he could do and be whatever he wanted, he declared he wanted to create a book to help other kids with birthmarks. (Out of the mouths of babes!)

My brain was saying, "Sorry, honey, Mommy can't do that because she doesn't know how!" But my mouth was saying, "We can do that."
