(CBS News) Amazon announced Thursday the launch of the Kindle Fire HD, new Kindle Fire and Kindle Paperwhite e-reader.

Amazon chief executive officer Jeff Bezos took the stage to introduce the Kinde Fire HD, Paperwhite and a stream of updated products. Bezos spoke about how the company has taken risks and emphasizing that the Kindle Fire is a service, not a gadget. The hardware, however, is a critical part of the service.

Facebook officially welcomes Instagram to family

"Our deal with Facebook has closed," the Instagram team said in a blog post Thursday. The company went on to say that the team will move into Facebook's office and that the popular mobile app "isn't going anywhere."

(CBS News) Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5 next week, which means rumors surrounding the new smartphone are at fever pitch. This time, a report is circulating that claims the company will be the sole maker of adapters for the iPhone 5's new dock connector.

Citing several sources, the blog iLounge reported that initially Apple will be the exclusive vendor for the iPhone 5's dock connector adapter. According to the report, the company has not offered developers specifications for the rumored dock connector. Additionally, the sources say the adapters will sell for about $10 each or $29 for a pack of three.

Amazon may unveil Kindle Fire 2, smartphone

(CBS News) Amazon is expected to announce several new products at a press conference Thursday in Los Angeles. Among the retail giant's lineup may be a Kindle Fire 2, smartphone and a new "Paperwhite" Kindle e-reader.

The new Kindle Fire 2 may feature a custom version of Google's mobile operating system Android, Nokia Navigation and location-services - either with a GPS chip or Wi-Fi triangulation.

(CBS News) Speculation about Apple's new iPhone is at fever pitch, particularly now that invitations to a Sept. 12 event have been sent out to the media.

The blog iMore garnered attention for accurately predicting the date of the Apple's iPhone 5 press event and now the site claims that leaked photos and video of "dummy phones" are accurate.

The photos in question are from the website iLounge, which reveals a taller iPhone with a 4-inch screen. Those photos align with several rumors that the iPhone 5 will increase in size - from a 3.5-inch to 4-inch display. The concept photos also reveal a 20 percent thinner body.

Survey reveals cell phone safety habits

(CBS News) Amid a new round of new smartphones launching this fall by tech giants like Apple, Nokia and Motorola, new questions of how Americans approach mobile phone use arise.

A survey by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project released Wednesday reveals that 88 percent of adults now own cell phones - up from 83 percent last year. Of those, 43 percent say they download apps to their phones.

Apple could sell 10 million in a week iPhone 5, analyst says

(CBS News) It's been only a day since Apple announced its Sept. 12 event, but one analyst is already estimating how many devices the company will sell.

According to a report by AllThingsD, Gene Munster, analyst at Piper Jaffray, says that Apple could possibly sell between 6 million to 10 million iPhone 5s in the first week of launch.

CNET confirms that the event is to be held at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

The invite is simple black text on a white background, with a huge number 12 with the text "It's almost here" above. Below in lieu of a shadow of the number 12, the number 5 appears instead - hinting at an iPhone 5.

Hackers claim to have 12M Apple IDs from FBI

(CBS News) Anonymous hackers are at it again. This time the target is the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Apple iPhones and iPads.

Hackers associated with the group Anonymous claimed to have obtained 12 million Apple unique device identifiers (UDID) from an FBI computer. A faction of the group that call themselves AntiSec posted instruction on how to access 1 million Apple UDIDs on the public bulletin board Pastebin. The group reported the hack via Twitter, using an Anonymous account.

An Apple UDID is a string of numbers and letters that identifies individual iPhones and iPads. The numbers are used to determine which devices are approved for content, including apps in beta tests.

An official Facebook app called "Convention Without Walls" lets users tell their stories by submitting photos and videos, which can be submitted via YouTube. The app lets users view the convention schedule (with events now delayed until Tuesday after Tropical Storm Isaac's threat), explore Tampa, and keep up with tweets from prominent Republicans.
