Apple, Microsoft probed for alleged price gouging

(CBS News) Apple and Microsoft are in hot water over alleged price gouging down under. The Australian Parliament is asking the companies why Australians pay more for music and games than customers abroad.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Minister of Communications, Stephen Conroy, has approved a "parliamentary inquiry, which will also consider pricing of software and other IT-related material and could have big implications for businesses."

Tech exec gets 22 years prison for $30M fraud

(AP) A former high-tech executive convicted of defrauding investors of at least $30 million on Monday was given one of the harshest sentences meted out in a white-collar criminal case.

A federal judge in San Francisco sentenced Samuel "Mouli" Cohen to 22 years in prison. Judge Charles Breyer also set a Thursday hearing to consider fines against Cohen that could total $60 million.

(CBS News) Imagine raising $7 million in a matter of weeks from nearly 50,000 strangers. That's the power of a growing trend in crowd funding, which is demonstrated by the most successful Kickstarter campaign yet.

Pebble is a watch that syncs with iPhone and Android smartphones to deliver email, text messages and calendar alerts, among other things. Dubbed the "smartwatch," Pebble's journey to becoming the most funded Kickstarter project to date is not exactly a Cinderella story, but impressive nonetheless.

Barnes & Noble, Microsoft team up on Nook

(AP) Barnes & Noble Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are teaming up to create a new Barnes & Noble subsidiary that will house the digital and college businesses of the bookseller and include a Nook application for Windows 8.

The companies said Monday that they are exploring separating those businesses entirely. That could mean a stock offering, sale, or other deal could happen.

(CBS News) Dropbox announced Friday an upgrade to its photo uploader. The service is now making it easier to upload photos from any camera, smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.

Dropbox offers 5GB of free cloud storage

Dropbox is an online cloud storage service, comparable with Microsoft's SkyDrive or Google Drive. The service works by syncing folders on your computer with a disk drive in the cloud and mobile devices. A free membership comes with 2GB of space.

(AP) The Federal Trade Commission has hired a prominent trial lawyer to oversee its broad investigation into Google's business practices, signaling the agency is troubled by what it has discovered so far in its year-old probe.

Former Justice Department prosecutor Beth Wilkinson will take the reins as the FTC digs deeper into allegations that Google Inc. has been abusing its dominance of Internet search to stifle competition and drive up online advertising prices. The FTC announced the move Thursday.

(CBS News) Workers at the Chinese factory Foxconn, where companies like Apple and Microsoft manufacture hardware, have threatened to commit suicide amid protests over wages.

Approximately 200 protesters in the Wuhan plant voiced concerns "workplace adjustments," however protests mostly  involves new workers of the plant," Reuters reports.

(AP) The House's solid bipartisan vote for a cybersecurity bill sends a message to the Senate: Now it's your turn to act.

Ignoring a White House veto threat, the House approved the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which would encourage companies and the federal government to share information collected on the Internet to help prevent electronic attacks from cybercriminals, foreign governments and terrorists.
