(CBS) It's been a very fashion-forward year for the Duchess of Cambridge.

The former Kate Middleton, 30, has spent her first year as a member of the royal family (she and Prince William will celebrate their first wedding anniversary on Sunday) hitting stylish high notes in a mix of designer frocks and budget-friendly pieces.

Ellen DeGeneres showed her own prom picture - and then the first lady's - when Mrs. Obama appeared on the show from Jacksonville, Fla., with a group of teenage girls from military families.

Dior picks Raf Simons to succeed John Galliano

(CBS/AP) PARIS - Christian Dior has chosen a new artistic director to succeed John Galliano.

The French fashion house says Belgian designer Raf Simons will present his first show in Paris in July.

"The first time I heard about the Dior position, I thought, 'This feels right,'" Simons told The New York Times.

The appointment comes seven months after star designer Galliano was convicted by a Paris court for making anti-Semitic insults. The job of artistic director has been open since then.

Simons, who previously designed for the Jil Sander fashion house, was considered a top candidate for the job.

A statement by Dior on Monday said Simons "will inspire and propel into the 21st century" the style of the prestigious house.

Transgender beauty queen removed from competition

(CBS News) A transgender beauty contestant has been banned from Miss Universe Canada, sparking dialogue over whether women who were born as men should be allowed to compete in the pageant.

According to CTV News, Jenna Talackova, 23, was born male but has identified as a female since age 4. She started hormone therapy at 14 and had gender surgery five years later.

(CBS/AP) LONDON - Stella McCartney has unveiled her designs for what Britain's Olympic team will wear during the London 2012 games.

The British designer's look puts the athletes in shades of blue with accents of red, and features the country's Union flag.

Alaskan beauty queen goes bald for good cause

(CBS/AP) ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Miss Alaska pageant requires contestants to perform a public service project. Under Debbe Ebben's silver tiara, is evidence of hers.

The reigning Miss Chugiak-Eagle River has raised more than $4,000 for children's cancer research for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, and last weekend, she delivered on a promise to people who pledged by allowing her brown tresses to be buzzed off.

(CBS/AP) Africa-influenced fashion, from Yves St. Laurent's 1960s collections to Proenza Schouler and Derek Lam's Spring 2012 shows, have been featured in designs for decades. Now, however, more and more African fashion designers are using both their heritage and international trends to gain attention on the world stage.

ARISE Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos, now in its second year, highlighted the work of mostly African or Africa-influenced designers. The 77 designers offered a range of outfits blending traditional fabrics with international aesthetics.
