Candidate Profile

Rep. Michele Bachmann has only been in Congress since 2007, but the Midwestern Republican has already built up a national reputation for her conservative values and fiery rhetoric. The two-term congresswoman from Stillwater, Minnesota, is a favorite among Tea Party conservatives - and not only because she founded the House of Representatives' Tea Party Caucus (a fact she often mentions).

Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Bachmann moved to Minnesota when she was eleven but sustains deep pride for her Iowa roots. After graduating from law school, she earned a master's of law in taxation at William and Mary, and spent the next several years working as a federal tax lawyer (a stint she frequently mentions on the campaign trail). In 2000, she was elected to the Minnesota State Senate, and won a seat in Congress six years later.

A born-again Christian, Bachmann's aggressive rhetoric - which has included some memorable factual gaffes - has gotten her into trouble in the past. She holds deeply conservative, often religiously-oriented values on social issues, and has made inflammatory statements about homosexuality and race.

But the candidate, if divisive, has also proven a powerful fundraiser: She raised $13 million for her most recent House re-election campaign, far surpassing the standard congressional fundraising figures. But her fundraising in the presidential race has fallen short of expectations, And while she was able to parlay her Midwestern roots and conservative values into a win at August's Iowa Straw Poll, Bachmann's momentum appears to have faded and she has struggled to maintain her status among the top tier of candidates.
