U.N. partitions Palestine into Jewish, Palestinian states. Arabs reject plan.
 May 14, 1948

Israel declares independence, setting off two-year war with Arab nations that ends with new Jewish state and about 700,000 Palestinian refugees.
 Oct. 29, 1956

Israel joins Britain, France in campaign against Egypt. Israel captures Sinai desert but is forced to withdraw by U.S. and Soviet Union.
 June 5, 1967

After Egypt blockades strategic straits and expels U.N. forces, Israel mounts pre-emptive strikes against Arab forces and captures Sinai desert, West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights.
 Sept. 5, 1972

Palestinian gunmen kill 11 Israeli athletes at Munich Olympics.
 Oct. 6, 1973

Egypt and Syria mount surprise attack on Yom Kippur. Israel defeats Arab forces but takes heavy losses.
 Nov. 19, 1977

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat visits Jerusalem, first by Arab head of state.
 March 26, 1979

Egypt and Israel sign peace treaty. Israel returns Sinai desert to Egypt.

Second Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation erupts.

Israel unilaterally pulls out of Gaza, destroying 21 Jewish settlements there and four in West Bank.

Israel and Palestinians resume peace negotiations.

Israel and Hamas agree to truce in Gaza.

Hamas announces that the truce has expired and that it will not be renewed. Rocket fire from Gaza increases.

In response to stepped up rocket and mortar attacks by Hamas and associated groups from Gaza, Israel launches Operation Oferet Yetzuka ("Cast Lead") with continuous air strikes at rocket launching facilities, factories, smuggling tunnels, and Hamas command and control centers. Hamas broadens rocket strikes to include Israeli towns and cities as far away as Beersheba and Yavneh.
 Jan. 3, 2009

Israel launches ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, sending tanks and infantry into battle with Hamas fighters. Israel says calls up tens of thousands of reservists.
