LOCATION:Greenville, the seat of Darke County, is in the southwest corner of Ohio, 30 miles northwest of Dayton and 10 miles from the Indiana state line.

HISTORY: It was founded in 1793, when General "Mad" Anthony Wayne established it as his base and named it after Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene of Rhode Island. For many years, it was the gateway to the Northwest Territories.

Population: 13,294 (53,309 for Darke County)

PEOPLE: Culture: The 101,704-book Greenville Public Library, a movie theater, Darke County Center for the Arts headquartered in Greenville's historic Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall, Greenville Community Concert Band, Greenville Music Club, Darke County Art Guild, and The Darke County Oratorio Society.

Schools: Two public and two private elementary schools, a public middle school, a public junior high and a public and a private high school.

Recreation: 6,800-square-foot Nature Center, seven parks, a bowling alley, a nearby speedway, a 9-hole public golf course, a driving range and miniature golf course, the Darke County YMCA.

Other landmarks: Eight houses of worship and Wayne Hospital.

Famous natives: Shawnee Chief Tecumseh had his base in Greenville. The town also was the birthplace of expert markswoman Annie Oakley, and author and radio broadcaster Lowell Thomas.
