Republican Olympia Snowe (Incumbent)


CBS News Race Outlook: Hay Bright, a farmer, was nominated with 51 percent — a margin of about 600 votes — over Eric M. Mehnert. It was going to be very difficult for a "card-carrying, flag-waving, patriotic American liberal" to defeat the moderate Snowe even though Kerry won the state in 2004. Snowe had a considerable fundraising advantage and had not won with less than 60 percent since she was first elected. The AFL-CIO and the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers endorsed Snowe.
