CBS News Race Outlook: Wisconsin was a presidential battleground in 2000 (and in 2004) but Kohl defeated his opponent handily last time out and was expected to win easily again. He is one of the richest men in Congress and his wealth deterred many Republicans from running against him. There was speculation that former Governor and Health and Human Service Secretary Tommy Thompson would challenge Kohl but Thompson announced in June that he would not run. Lorge, a Christian conservative, finished a distant fourth in the 2004 Republican primary for Senate getting only 4 percent of the vote.
